Volleyball Club Problem?

Featured Replies

This topic came up in another thread.

Do volleyball club coaches tell young girls they shouldn't play other sports?

Do they threaten young girls by saying if you play another sport you will lose playing time on the club volleyball team?

At what age is it ok to make threats of losing playing time to athletes if they don't do as the club coach says and focus only on volleyball?

What are everyone's thoughts on this?

I think ANY high school or lower level coach that discourages children from playing more than one sport should be out of coaching permanently.

How can you play club volleyball and play basketball? Seems like it has to be one or the other.

I guess you have to be really good at both sports then neither coach will dare run you off.

If you choose to play club vball you are choosing to NOT play basketball. It's not fair to either coach if you try to play both.

Gosh I hate it when "kids aren't fair to coaches."

Let's change it up. Let's say the child wants to play soccer yet also play in the marching band. Should both coaches allow that even though they need them every day?

I have seen football players take off their helmet at halftime and march in the band.

I am sure the coaches "needed" them at halftime too but this is about the kids not the coaches needs.

Some of this depends on the level of club ball being played.

Someone playing high level open club volleyball (NKYVC Tsunami, Tri-State Elite Blue, Lexington Elite, KIVA, etc..) will be consumed by the practice time and tournament travel. Both the HS basketball and Club VBall seasons run concurrently so she would be missing numerous practices for both teams and have conflicts for games, especially on the weekends.

Both teams will be counting on your commitment to be present for all practices and games. How does a basketball team go without their starting point guard or the volleyball team go without their setter? This puts the coaches in a quandary for setting team attendance rules and opens up the opportunity for resentment amongst teammates. If you can't commit fully to a team, you really shouldn't be on it.

Not to mention that playing both sports at the same time can really wear down a body. That's twice the impact on a player's joints and muscles and that can certainly lead to injuries.

In most cases, the players at the elite Volleyball clubs are playing because they have designs on playing in college. I've seen it done, rarely, by some athletes, but both teams suffer for it.

Someone playing a lower level club volleyball or playing on a "regional" type team with much less travel could probably make it work. The volleyball expectations and travel are not as demanding at that level.

What is the commitment required for club volleyball?

How often does club volleyball practice and how often do they have matches?

Are matches played during the week or only on weekends?

Have you seen players be at both basketball and volleyball (soccer) games at the same time? In separate towns? separate states? This is really not as debatable as people want to make it seem.

Club soccer and volleyball conflict with basketball. Period. I can show you my schedule if you don't agree.

it's not just the coaches - it's your team mates. There are only so many spots on the team and your team mates are counting on you to be there. And yes the coaches do get a little touchy about it.

Could you help out and give some specific answers to my questions? I am curious about the scheduling - practices and matches - in the club sports. I am especially having a hard time seeing how club soccer conflicts with basketball.

I don't disagree, considering you qualified this as a school coach. For club coaches it is a whole different story. For the highest level of soccer, it is not even optional - it's contractual. You can not play for your school. If you don't like it, then don't play.

I know soccer players that played the very highest level of club soccer and also played high school soccer.
