I believe there are contractual obligations to have the matches played at Georgetown. Thankfully the travel time is not that great, only about 1 hour and 20 minutes to get to Georgetown. Hotel may be an option though for either of the 4 teams.

I think you are spot on old guy. Which is kind of surprising considering that the football team has one game left at home this season(however I do not know how the NAIA playoffs work, so they may have more home games that would be a legit concern). What was surprising was the rationale for not moving everything back a day. The boys are supposed to play Thursday night and the reason that was given for not moving everyone is that this way it only effects 4 teams instead of 8. The final is still set for Saturday night so one team will be playing on 24 hours rest the other on 22 hours. That would seem to be a little more of a safety concern to me than the .36 inches of rain Georgetown received today. We were told that the field was under water. I spoke with several people who said the field was wet, but not under water. The field is actually in much better condition this year than it was last year so it should be fine for Friday even after the boys play on it on Thursday. Like we discussed in a previous thread, thankfully the game will not be decided by how many people there are in the stands but by those on the field and I would like for the game to be played under the best possible field conditions even if that means playing on Friday night. What might be an option is to move the girls final to a Monday night(to give an extra couple days between the two biggest mathes of the year)??? Not sure if that is being considered though. Bottom line is that sometimes the weather just sucks!!!

Games postponed this evening for rain. Strange considering Georgetown has had less than one half an inch of rain... Field is in very good condition as well. Girls games have been pushed to Friday. Silly.

Some of the old guard at FIFA will be retiring by the end of the decade and the new blood is apart of the group that have proposed alternatives to PK's. I think we might see a change away from PK's in the next 10 years. The closest comparison that can me made would be ending a basketball game with a free throw shooting contest. However the new college football overtime rules bear a similar nature to PK's. Both teams get the ball from a set spot on the field with a chance to score. Many of these become a field goal kicking contest. While it is not the same as PK's it does bear some similarities. I like the NFL's method better even with the advantage that the team winning the OT toss gets. The game gets decided in the course of regular play. The other idea that FIFA had on the table at one point was after extra time was to have the goalkeeper's rules changed to the same as a field player (not able to use hands). Interesting, but I can not see that idea happening.

I agree with you. I would love for them to adopt the format that I described rather than PK's. The purists or traditionalists are the ones against changing the format of the game that dramatically because PK's have been apart of the game for a very long time.

FIFA has discussed continuing to play extra time and removing a player every 5 minutes until the teams are 7v7. Someone would eventually score in that scenario or keel over dead from exhaustion. The purists have not been swayed by that yet and penalty kicks, while not the best way to end a match IMO, are one of the most pressure packed exciting parts of a soccer match. For those in the crowd that have taken a penalty kick in a win or go home scenario know that it is some of the most intense pressure you will ever feel as a player. That 8 foot by 24 foot goal all of a sudden looks very small from 12 yards away. In the match tonight the Highlands keeper was truly remarkable. She saved 3 of the 4 penalty kicks she faced. Normally, if a keeper saves 1 in 5 they are doing great. 2 in 5 they might erect a statue of the goalkeeper outside the stadium. 3 of 4 is out of this world. Congratulations to Highlands and good luck in the state tournament.

The main reason, the sentence after the one you bolded, to not play the game tonight is another day to let the field dry out. We got 2 inches of rain on Monday and .55 inches last night. I would prefer to play the match under the best possible field conditions. If we get a day tomorrow like late afternoon was today, field should be very playable. The crowd conditions are secondary. Nothing is more prime time then Saturday night under the lights when it comes to soccer.

Games were originally scheduled for Monday and Wednesday. Weather forced them to later in the week(Wednesday and Saturday). Did not want to play on Thursday, back to back games is brutal(weather wouldn't have allowed it anyway). Not going up against football either on Friday night. Saturday is the best choice weather and timing wise. The matches, volleyball and soccer will be decided on the field or court. Fan support will have very little to do with it. The reasons the regions are different is that there are not as many soccer teams as there are girls basketball teams.

Field actually played better in the second match as the moisture on the top layer got spread out a little. Footing was much better. Should be a great match on Saturday.

Games are on for Wednesday night. 6:00pm NCC vs. NDA, 7:30pm Holy Cross vs. Highlands, at Tower Park.

Looking like Thursday is more likely.

Usually the game would be resumed from the point it was stopped. Must play at least a complete half in soccer to have the game be considered official.
