GO BIRDS

It indeed was a great soccer match. Both teams played their hearts out, and even if NDA had won, I would have still said I hate it when you win or lose in a shoot out. It is the only part of the beautiful game that I hate.

Good luck to the team from Ft. Thomas, and bring home the State Championship back to NKy.

Note: my only complaint about the match.......

My only complaint of the game and something that I did not enjoy, was the announcer. A regional tournament game is suppose to have an announcer being just that, an announcer. While I understand his cheering on the Team from Ft. Thomas at one of your home games, I really think he was a bit much for the team from Ft. Thomas during a Regional tournament game. Again, I understand him being a homer during one of your home games, and if you had "won" the right to host the match I wouldn't complain, but being the "Host" of the Regional, I just thought his cheering for the home team was a bit much.....

Again Congrats to your Girls, and bring home that State Championship.....

Admittedly not a Soccer fan, but there has got to be someway other than penalty kicks to settle a playoff game. Ending a game the way no regular season game ends is just not right. I feel for the players who dedicate themselves to the sport.

FIFA has discussed continuing to play extra time and removing a player every 5 minutes until the teams are 7v7. Someone would eventually score in that scenario or keel over dead from exhaustion. The purists have not been swayed by that yet and penalty kicks, while not the best way to end a match IMO, are one of the most pressure packed exciting parts of a soccer match. For those in the crowd that have taken a penalty kick in a win or go home scenario know that it is some of the most intense pressure you will ever feel as a player. That 8 foot by 24 foot goal all of a sudden looks very small from 12 yards away. In the match tonight the Highlands keeper was truly remarkable. She saved 3 of the 4 penalty kicks she faced. Normally, if a keeper saves 1 in 5 they are doing great. 2 in 5 they might erect a statue of the goalkeeper outside the stadium. 3 of 4 is out of this world. Congratulations to Highlands and good luck in the state tournament.

Heck, I'm not a soccer fan either, but I find the penalty kick off ending much more exciting than the rest of the game. I've been telling people since last year's state title game, they should amend the rules to eliminate all the other part of the game and just do the penalty kick off portion. That is exciting.

The prior paragraph was typed with tongue in cheek (well, sort of:banana:)

I really do hope FIFA chances the rule, as I have Coached teams who have won and lost matches via shoot outs. I have had kids cry for day's feeling they lost the game for the team, and I have had kids who felt so sorry for the other team, that it took away their enjoyment of the victory.

I would compare a shoot out to an overtime basketball ending in what team missed the most free throws in the best of ten tries, or a baseball game not going into extra inning but into a home run derby contest, or a football game ending on a one one passing contest. Shoot outs while great for the fans, aren't really a part of how the game is played. Yes I understand that this is the way the rule is now, but I am hoping that they change it to what Gunner spoke of and I think that day isn't that far away......

How could soccer "purists" (FIFA?) be against removing a player and continuing to play the game instead of penalty kicks? I'm sure the penalty kick situation is pressure-packed and exciting but then what does that say about all the action that preceeded it? And if it is such a great way to decide the game, then why not do it in the regular season so teams can at least have some experience with it?

Can you imagine this happeneing in any other sport? Let's say Highlands and NDA are playing in the 9th region final in Basketball. Game ends in a tie so they shoot 5 foul shots each? Or play 1 on 1 and whatever team scores the most baskets wins? Or in Softball? Each team selects 5 hitters and whatever team has the most hitters makes contact wins?

I agree with you. I would love for them to adopt the format that I described rather than PK's. The purists or traditionalists are the ones against changing the format of the game that dramatically because PK's have been apart of the game for a very long time.

Some of the old guard at FIFA will be retiring by the end of the decade and the new blood is apart of the group that have proposed alternatives to PK's. I think we might see a change away from PK's in the next 10 years. The closest comparison that can me made would be ending a basketball game with a free throw shooting contest. However the new college football overtime rules bear a similar nature to PK's. Both teams get the ball from a set spot on the field with a chance to score. Many of these become a field goal kicking contest. While it is not the same as PK's it does bear some similarities. I like the NFL's method better even with the advantage that the team winning the OT toss gets. The game gets decided in the course of regular play. The other idea that FIFA had on the table at one point was after extra time was to have the goalkeeper's rules changed to the same as a field player (not able to use hands). Interesting, but I can not see that idea happening.

My daughter (U9 select) has played 5 games since last Sunday. Her team is undefeated during those five (5) games. Unfortunately they were all five ties.

Shootouts are a coin toss. Both teams have the equal chance.

People complain about shootouts, but it is part of the game. Teams spend a lot of time practicing PKs and it's a great skill of the game. It's tough to end a game like that, but conceivably playing 4 or 5 overtimes of 10-20 minutes apiece is borderline unsafe for the players.

While it is tough to end a game like that, it's not like teams are thrown out there without having the chance to practice, players prepare for them.
