I agree 100% Bayshore.

I guess a "serious" athlete "could" be one that is serious about school too. HC is unproven. The good folks think that the new facility will make a diff. academically. Well HHS is proven. I don't agree with the recent site based decisions on hold backs, but even with that, I'd rather have my athlete at HHS for academics. A serious athlete doesn't mean play for the "biggest" school, or even the one that wins the most. So sorry youth coach, for a rare time, I disagree 100%.

I can tell you where it comes from. Some mama doesn't want her baby who is in a certain grade and pretty good at a certain sport to be suplanted by anyone who is better athletically because he is a year older. I understand this, and even once held the same opinion. However after going through an entire elementary, middle, and high school kid now, with a boy who is a year older than most of his classmates, I think this should be the parent's choice within the rules. If the complaints were purely motivated by academics, they shouldn't worry if little Johnny gets to start or not. I guess we can be buds on this issue LB. And maybe you are right too that some don't want to do it just to be different from the county. Its a bad decision in my opinion, but since I chose to start my boys late, it doesn't affect me. My advice to parents, start your kids in Kindergarten at 6. Its better for them all around.

I can see both sides, but what we did was to start our boys late into kindergarten. I had no idea mine would play sports at all. Heck, I didn't. But I did this after advice from some wise teacher's who told me at 5 little boys aren't as ready for school as 5 year old girls. I followed this with my boys and academically and socially it has been very positive. Besides, I get to keep my kids for an extra year. My oldest benefitted in sports also and I think my youngest will as well. I agree with you HDE, if the parents think its best and the rules are followed, I can't see the harm.

Any idea why? I have mixed feelings on the subject. Just wondering what the deal breaker was?

I think NG was referring to the change in the holdback policy for next year. As for high tuition, its really not "high", because the tuition only reflects a portion of the cost of educating a student in any school system. It affects all grades, however your paranoia of the city's motives, while typical is laughable. Its this simple. It cost money to educate a child. The County's ADA compromise was to limit the folks covered at a certain number. Beyond that the City wouldn't recieve any state money for educating them. Therefore tuition is charged. I can't see how that is "choosing" students. I've heard parent complaints of "choosing" in the county system among its own schools. Really LB, your witch hunt for "smoke screens" and "advantages" is amusing at best and pathetic at worst.

My one thought on this thread is that its another self indulgent swipe at anyone other than Northern Kentucky Schools. When thinking up threads, why not pick one that isn't just made up to vaunt your own biases?

Congrats to the young man! I'm looking forward to seeing some of our local kids, who are old rival play together at U of C!

How about letting all district teams get together by regions and play a game?

Just for discussion, if you had 16 teams in class A, I could see Harlan being in a 4 team district with Williamsburg, Jenkins, and Pineville, but are the other 12 in close enough proximity to play each other in order to have a playoff system?

Harlan Standout Noseguard Aaron Jones signed a National Letter of Intent today at Harlan High School to play football at the University of the Cumberlands. Aaron had official visits with D-1AA College of the Holy Cross, and NAIA schools Union and Campbellsville as well. Aaron also considered D-3 Geneva College in Pennsylvania and walk on opportunities at Western and Furman University. Aaron plans to major in Secondary Education and eventually teach and coach football.

Aaron has narrowed his choices to College of the Holy Cross and Cumberlands. He will probably sign early next week with one of these teams.

You would have to know how College of the Holy Cross recruiting differs from other D-1 schools. My son is being recruited by HC. The academic level is incredible and they do not water it down for football players. They graduate 98% of their football players compared to 97% of their general student body. So, you have to be able to compete at not only a high level on the field, but in the classroom as well. I don't know any of these kids well, but I know they won't even get a glance at a Patriot league, or Ivy league school if they can't compete in a very challenging academic environment.

If a student comes to Harlan or for that matter any other school and enrolls, is he or she not a part of that school? This city kid issue is a sore spot for some folks. If a kid goes to Harlan they are a Dragon no matter where they live. Everyone plays under the same rules. Same goes is a "city" kid went to Cawood. He/she would be a trojan, would they not. Or would they be denied something due to living in the city. If the rules are being followed, I don't see the "city" thing being relevant at all.

Oldiges committed with College of the Holy Cross this weekend. My son was on an official visit with him. They do not offer traditional scholarships. I would suggest anyone interested in the topic to visit the Patriot League Website. Holy Cross is one of the premier undergraduate institutions in America, however. Congrats to Eric, met him on this visit and he is a great kid! Holy Cross is Div. 1 AA now known as Div. 1 FCS

thank you! Harlan High is Harlan Independent. Harlan County High is the new school. It would have been better for both if the powers had picked Southern Highlands, or Harlan Central instead.

Yes, the Jesuits are a Catholic order. It is part of the Patriot League and they play the Ivies when out of conference mostly. They have a nice website for athletics. http://www.goholycross.com

Holy Cross has a Sophomore to be from Fort Thomas I believe. Someone for Aaron to connect to in Yankee-Land, if he chooses HC.

D1-AA College of the Holy Cross has invited Harlan Green Dragon Nose Guard Aaron Jones for an official visit this coming weekend. Aaron is also considering NAIA schools University of the Cumberlands, Union, Campbellsville, and D-3 Geneva College in PA. Aaron was honored this year with the KFCA District 7 Co-player of the year, SEKC Class A Defensive Lineman of the Year, District 7 Lineman of the Year, and Harlan County Lineman of the Year. He has been All County, All District, and All SEKC for 3 years.
