Interesting game with both teams looking to tune up for Districts. On the Ryle defensive side, makes sense that they don't use any arms they plan to use in the tourney. For HHS, no game until WED at the earliest, so makes sense to use top 2 starters for reasonable # of innings / pitches and their primary reliever for an inning to stay sharp. As to the offensive side, no reason for either team to hold back here. Not sure if Ryle held any usual starters out, but Birds pitching held them in check. 3 unearned runs in the B6 for Ryle as the rains came down. Ramey did hit the ball hard on each occasion. Others did as well. Good luck to both teams in the Districts.

This rule is just like the batters box. A - it is almost never called. B - if you are going to call it, and you are an ump worth your salt, you measure 36" from the point where home plate angles (a bat is, coincidentally, very handy in making this measurement) forward and backward and draw a little line there for the batter. If he is out of the box after that display, he deserves to be called out. If you think there might be a violation of the "catcher's box," you do the same thing and make the C very aware you are doing it. If he then jumps out way too early, he deserves to have it called on him. There is virtually no advantage gained by this call, so it is a technical violation you have to really be looking for to even have it come up.

Oh how times have changed. Discussion about TOO MANY HHS students coming to a BASEBALL game and acting TOO boisterous. These are good problems to have.

Interesting that nobody has jumped on this same topic in the JV thread like it was in the Frosh thread. If I read the above correctly, Fieger pitched 0 innings of JV this year prior to the tourney but did pitch Varsity innings? Given his stuff, I would assume he has been pitching fairly regularly at some level this season.

But doesn't the JV tourney have to be concluded before the Varsity post-season gets underway on MON? What happens if they don't finish?

Sounds like a solid win for NCC prepping for tourney time.

#10 - Hostetler? (excuse the spelling if that is not even close). Lots of off speed stuff that kept the Birds off balance.

SO Bunning for Birds had good stuff when I was there and defense played well behind him. Beechwood P also had very good control, velocity and change of speed. Key play for the time I was there occurred B6. Birds with 1st & 3rd and 1 out. Runner from 1st stealing 2nd. 2B covering against RH hitter. Line drive up the middle caught by 2B for a DP. I don't think 2B can get there if he's not covering on the steal. At a minimum, it probably is not a DP. Great season for the JV Birds. Lots of success and lots of development. Many of these players will be asked to contribute at the varsity level next year with 9 SRs departing.

Congrats to the Baby Birds! As I said in the JV thread, lots of these players will be asked to contribute at the JV level next year with JV players moving up to fill in for 9 departing seniors. Great to see quality and commitment throughout the program getting an opportunity to contribute and be prepared for the next level when it comes. Lots of positive things going on with HHS Baseball right now.

Birds suffer another long inning with poor defense and walks that spoils the rest of the effort. 2 straight days. Hopefully they have gotten it out of their system prior to the District Tourney next week. On a bright note, SR Schultz pitched a few innings for the 1st time since very early in the season. After such a long layoff, the velocity was good, the breaking ball was moving (but not fully under control as you would expect) and the instincts were there. If he can get a few innings v. Ryle on SAT and maybe an inning or 2 in the district tournament, he could be a tremendous addition to the pitching staff with SO Jones, JR Cochran and SR Liggett out of the bullpen. Those 3 starters were the key to the HHS late run in 2012. Maybe they can repeat the feat in 2013. On another bright note, 2 straight games where the Birds bats' came alive. Lots of good swings and solid contact. Final home game of 2013 scheduled for FRI v. Conner.

Other than the top of the 3rd inning, it was a "Great day to be a Bluebird" yesterday. *Senior Day for 9 quality players / people and all 9 got to play *Community Appreciation day for everyone from babies to toddlers to high school students to old folks (like me) *Team Tammy ('nuff said) *Baby Birds rally to defeat NewCath 4-1 with 4 runs in the top of the 7th in the Frosh Tourney *JV Birds defeated Brossart 11-5 in the JV Tourney opener *Dirty Birds hit the ball hard and took advantage of some shaky fielding to go up 6-1 after 2 innings *Dirty Birds rallied for 4 runs in the last 5 innings rather than tucking their tails and hiding *Beautiful weather (if a bit chilly) *Got to see Coach Duggins Now about the top of the 3rd. Wow! Each of the infielders, a usually solid group over the past 2 yrs., had an error or a miscue. Birds pitchers worked from behind in the count and walked at least 3 and probably more. (Even more of a mortal sin than usual when leading 6-1!) When they did get the ball over the plate, it was elevated and Trinity mistreated those pitches -- as they should -- including a 3 run bomb to end the scoring. Hopefully the kids focus on all of the positives and let that 1/2 inning slip from their memories. Plenty of these players (and parents) remember when those innings were the norm instead of the exception. We've come a long way since then, but still have a ways to go. Gotta keep grinding!!! #RTB

Anyone got Conner v. Ludlow result and any other game times for 2nd Round games not yet mentioned in this thread? Will post an updated bracket when I get this info.

Dixie P kept HHS off balance all day. 18 of the 21 outs recorded (including 2 DPs) were via ground balls. Only a few of the 7 hits HHS had were squared up. SO Jones did a good job without his best stuff yesterday. Worked out of trouble on several occasions. 2 failed suicide squeeze bunts and a couple of runners picked off were huge by the HHS defense. Birds failed to convert in the 7th with runners on 1st & 3rd to end the game.

Any idea who goes for both teams this evening. Given the score and records, I suspect NCC did not pitch their #1 (if they have such a thing in Frosh) against Holmes.
