I'm really sticking my neck out here to respond at all. First let me say that I have nothing but admiration and respect for the boys at Elliott County, and they have already achieved something that they will be able to enjoy the rest of their lives. It may sound corny, but I genuinely love these kids. They are fierce competitors, and lay it all out on the floor. They are gentlemen off the floor. I wish them nothing but the best... with the possible exception of when they face one certain 16th Region team. :lol: Elliott fans have every reason to be proud of their boys, and should do everything they can to support them. Even so, I don't have to go back to the dark ages to find teams that would present them serious match up issues. The Morgan County team featuring 6' 6" AA Admir Algic and the West Liberty boys would give them fits. I'm not going to say Elliott couldn't beat them, but Morgan County could also win on any given night. Last season's Russell squad with a healthy Jon VanHoose was a headache for Elliott... not invincible, but definitely a headache. The 2002-2003 Rose Hill team would have given Elliott fits featuring 6' 4" All-Stater O.J. Mayo, 6' 5" 2nd team All-Stater Marques Dawson (who set a new state record with 16 steals in a game,) 6' 4" Mark King (who once scored 20 points in one quarter,) muscular 6' 3" banger Josh Magnuson, 6' 5" power dunker and rebounding machine Bill Walker, with eventual Huntington High standouts Michael Taylor and Jamaal Williams, future Russell stars Jonathan VanHoose and Austin Blair, Fairview playmaker Alex Barker, Greenup sharp-shooter Zach Gillum, Raceland scorer Jamison Sparks, Marcus and Matt Thomas and others. As far as Regional dominance, the Ashland Tomcats in the four seasons between 1975 and 1979 under Paul Patterson did not lose one game to a Regional opponent, and went to Freedom Hall (pre-Rupp) four straight years. A feat that is unlikely to be repeated again. Bottom line, enjoy the ride to the fullest. You never know when it might end, or how long it may be before it happens again... if ever. :thumb:

I'm all for letting kids play anytime and anywhere they can. I've even known a lot of small/inexperienced seniors who probably should have had the chance to play some JV ball. As long as the same age/grade rules apply and are enforced toss it up and let 'em play! :thumb:

I also just want to say—win, lose or draw—it was great having a loud crowd, a rivalry and excitement in "The Stew" again. This is what high school sports are all about. :thumb: The Ashland student section was over-the-top and entertaining as usual. I thought I’d looked at the schedule wrong, and Raceland was going to run out of the locker room when I saw all the orange on the Ashland side. Not sure what that was all about, but the “Maroon Maniacs” were hard to ignore. Derek Runyon and the Ashland staff did a great job keeping things in balance. :thumb: The big surprise was the student section for Rose Hill… hats off to Lauren Burgess who had "The Stew Crew" in prime form. I can't remember a better effort by a RH student section. It was definitely appreciated by the Royals. Hats off to all involved on both sides of the gym. :thumb:

I was just messing with you LRCW. :lol: Dicky is truly a broadcasting icon in this region. There's no doubt where his loyalties lie, and I for one don't think there's one thing wrong with that. Dirk and Dicky provide a high entertainment value even during otherwise dull games. Every school needs "homers" like them in their corner. :thumb: And to be perfectly honest... I can't think of any two guys I'd rather have talking a little "smack" about my school. That means we're on the radar somewhere above "cupcake" status. :thumb:

No offense LBBC... that may be the way it works in your neck of the woods, but in our region "reciprocal" agreements are in place that permit kids to attend public schools in other school districts without paying added tuition. I would assume this is a decision that is made by each school district and as a result varies from district to district. Public schools have a pool of students to which they are entitled, private schools do not. That's why it makes no sense IMO for anyone to try to pin this on private schools only.

If the "monitary assistance" is for nothing more than tuition, books, athletic participation fees and equipment, the private school student derives no added "monetary" benefit than what ALL public school students receive just for showing up. The only way anyone can assert that the benefit is greater for the student at a private school over a public school, is to also admit that the private school education and environment is superior to the public schools. I find it ironinc that the people who seem to be the most adamantly against private schools are the very same people making this admission. If it could ever be proven that a student received money over and above the expenses needed for the same things public school kids get free, I would agree with you 100%. Slam the lid on the private school that would do such a thing. I don't think this is the case at LCA. I understand the pride and sentiment everyone has in kids in their system. Pride in one's community is a disappearing commodity in today's world. I would never insult that. The fact however, is that many public schools have open enrollments as big as some of the private schools everyone seems to be so upset with. I know that within the 16th Region 64th District a student that lives in the Fairview district can attend and play sports at Ashland or Boyd County or Rose Hill. A student in the Ashland district can do the same at Boyd County, Fairview or Rose Hill. As far as I know, there are reciprocal agreements in place that allow students anywhere in the 16th Region to attend any other school in the region... if they're willing to make the commute. I also know public schools in the region who had student athletes from Ohio or West Virginia in the past. I don't know how it is in other Regions, but I'm not sure the difference is all that lopsided. I'd like to hear you try to convince some of the folks I do business with that I'm a sophisticated city slicker... :lol:

I have no idea what percentage of the student body at LCA actually participates in a sport. With around 400 students and teams in football, baseball, golf, tennis, basketball, softball, track, swimming, diving, soccer, cross-country, volleyball, cheerleading, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if a very high percentage of the student body are classified as athletes. If it weren't for the potential harm it could cause some kids who don't deserve the venom they would receive from angry adults, I'd be interested to see the names and actual stats of the "athletes" who received tuition assistance in this situation. I would be surprised to discover significant "impact" players on the list. I agree that actual "recruiting" should be punished to the fullest extent. I don't think that providing tuition assistance to kids who need it (and is free at all public schools) falls under the same umbrella.

You are correct in stating that we are not too far apart on this. I agree that any amount over and above actual tuition and school costs, (which include books, extracurricular participation and equipment fees) which are all covered free of cost at public schools does raise eyebrows and could very well indicate a situation of "monetary gain." I simply find it disingenuous and misleading for those who assert that tuition and other basic school costs that are not above and beyond what public school kids receive for free is somehow a monetary gain.

Let me state that I agree 100% with the "no recruiting" rules. If there is clear cut evidence that recruiting is going on, drop the hammer... public, private... no difference. Where we seem to be on different pages is the area of "monetary gain" as you put it. If every public school in the state is offering "free books and tuition" how is it considered "monetary gain" if a private school makes the same opportunity available? Where is the gain?

How is it possible that private schools are "better"? They have no state funding, fewer tax breaks and other government incentives. Either private schools are superior to public schools, and we need to open them up to more families with vouchers, or people need to get over the fact that some schools just do things better than others. Why should a parent of a talented child be forced into sending that child to school with a bunch of sweathogs that don't care what kind of grades they get or what kind of work they'll do when they grow up?

If LCA were providing "spending money" to student athletes to attend the school I could understand the enticement. "Tuition assistance" is nothing more than what is available at every public school in the state... every one. What is LCA supposedly offering a student athlete that is not offered freely to every student at every public school in the state?

Wazoo Sports said it will be, even though they didn't have it listed on their site.

Moss Point, Mississippi enters this game 18-1 and is ranked among the top four teams in the state. They like to push the tempo. This will be a big test for Rose Hill. Moss Point is a 4A school with around 1,110 students in a 5 class state. HHSDad has good intel... :thumb:
