  1. All my posts are opinions...and i agree it probably would make sense to keep it in the same format as the KHSAA state tournament. Reality is...with some of these regions, the small schools do not have the skills to compete with the Louisville Holy Cross' and University Heights. But with good weather, the pool format is doable and gives these small schools the opportunity to play in this tournament (some teams travelling 4+ hours to get in guaranteed 3 games) instead of losing two right away. Just my opinion...best teams will advance out of a pool. Plus, it kind of offsets a "bad draw" and playing the favorite in the first round.
  2. So the legitimate State tournament is held at this location as well? When you have the best team from each region represented, do the State games run on-time for the most part? Like I said in our games, our first game (second one on the field) barely started on time; and our second game (third on the field for the day) was already an hour+plus behind schedule.....how do you get those games back on track for the rest of the day (if you're not lucky enough to get a three-inning run rule)? are you going to have time limits on the State games? Time limits for the First Round only?
  3. I've heard they've never really had great weather on whatever weekend this fell on. Pool Play versus a two-and-out format really isn't that much of a difference in the total number of games played (Pool Play just allows each team to get a guaranteed number of 3 games). Due to the skill level in these small schools from small regions of the state to the other regions where fast-pitch is more popular, there are quite of few games that were (or could be) three-inning run ruled variety. So Pool Play will still allow the expected or favored teams to advance to the elimination round. Changing the format to the 2-and-out eliminates the games that aren't necessary (pool play) and makes almost every game a variety of an elimination game. Losing the majority of a day caused less-than-ideal decisions to be made. Dont get me wrong, i'm not saying things could have been done differently or better. But the committee had to make some unpopular decisions.
  4. JamTime....you probably have more insight than I do at running tournaments like this (if your daughter plays travel ball and go to these tourneys like this every weekend in the summer). The way our team was forced into a third consecutive game in the winners bracket with NO time to rest or eat wasnt fair, and it showed in our early innings of that game against Hancock. Tarping just one field probably did dictate what their plans were for the next day. I also feel that they probably had an idea of how far or how many games had to be completed by the end of the day Saturday in order to complete the tourney and not cancel any games for Sunday. I spoke with someone from St Henry during our game against Jenkins and appeared St Henry was waiting an awfully long time to play your second game against KCC. So, i will have to take your word as to what you say about the games running behind on the other fields and whatever was going on during our game against Jenkins. All i know is that our first game at 10:30 barely started on time (I think that was the second game of the day on that field) and then right away at 12:00 our game was an hour late (starting at 1:00) on the other field.
  5. Weather forces the committee to have to make some tough decisions...not everyone is going to like the decisions. They probably would have had to stop the games at 3:00 in order to tarp all four fields. Games on some fields were running an hour-plus behind schedule. In order to get all the games in that they needed to on Saturday night, they might have had to play until 2:00 a.m.; and then who knows if the outfields would have been playable. We had a ton of rain at our hotel. So the options would have been still cancelling some games or the losers bracket; or putting all games on a 1:15 time limit. If there had been a time limit on the games, i'm sure 50% of the teams would have complained about that. Weather sucked...
  6. If you build it, they will come. I wouldn't be a fan of the turf fields I would think. Can't do anything about the weather. The committe has a tough job when havingto make a decision like that. You want a single elimination tournament where a team might drive 4 hours and get eliminated in three innings. No one is going to be happy when you change the format and have to eliminate games. Our girls had to play back-to-back-to-back in the winners bracket. Not fair either...would like to have had a half hour or hour to let them eat something before the Hancock game but bad weather was on the way.
  7. Brossart trailing Hancock County 8-0 in the 4th in the semi-finals of the winners bracket. Louisville Holy Cross and Raceland 0-0 half inning in on their semi-final game of the other winners bracket. Not hearing anything official of dropping the losers bracket and maybe just depends on how much rain falls.
  8. No details. Just caught the last inning of the game. Breezy conditions down here for the early games. Depending on which field you are on, wind blowing in hard, or out, or left to right.
  9. Brossart advancesin the winner's bracket with the shutout win over Trimble. Schackelford with the 7-inning shutout. Jordyn Boesch with a couple hits and rbis.
  10. That'll close down this thread! Come on, I can't call someone Harry Carey but we have to see this!?!? Ha!
  11. i agree on the positioning....then he just missed the call b/c it wasn't even a "tie"....the runner beat it by a half-step.
  12. Thanks! Due to the small size of the infield in softball, i'm sure the positioning of the field umpire would be behind the infielders instead of where they'd usually be for baseball. Bases being only 60-ft, the home plate umpire was much closer to the play to "hear" the ball-in-the-glove-and-foot-to-the-base impacts. Thanks for the baseball clarification of the positioning. Overall, the umpiring crews that had our games in the Madison Central tournament were very good and very consistent IMO.
  13. Something that i'm not sure about and was wondering since it had a huge impact in one of Brossart's games yesterday. The situation was...bases loaded and two outs. Where should the "bases" umpire be located in this situation and does the home plate umpire have any authority other than home plate. The batted ball ended up being a play at first base on a grounder to third, and it was the bang-bang play at first. I call it a bang-bang play but in my honest opinion (backed up by the reaction on the field and with some opposing teams' fans in the stands) the runner beat the throw by a half step honestly. The bases umpire made the "out" call that ended the threat from out behind the shortstop.
  14. Entering elimination play now...Jenkins playing oak hill, Cincinnati....brossart plays Western Hill, ky.
  15. Lady Stangs drop another one in the Tomahawk Classic 4-1 to Jenkins. Good pitching effort from Megan Seiter, with just one tough inning, but the bats have quieted the past couple games. Bad call in bottom of 5th ended at scoring opportunity. Bases load two outs, riley orth beats out grounder to third but the call goes against us, with the meat of the lineup up next. Competitive games preparing the lady Stangs for this coming weekend.
  16. Correction: Elizabeth Martin had a triple in the JV game. Anyways, the Camels have some really nice talent coming up in the next couple of years. Very impressed with their young players on both the JV and Varsity. Time will only tell if the pitching advances or continues to improve but they will have some nice players and hitters to give some teams fits.
  17. Nice competitive game last night in Harrison County. Brossart took an early 2nd inning lead on a 2-run single by third baseman Liz Martin. Scored remained that way until Harrison came back with two runs in the fourth inning on a double to right and an errant throw from the catcher to 3b after the throw home. I think Harrison tacked on another run in the fifth (memory escapes me of how...think i got distracted). Harrison scores another run in the bottom of 6th to take a 4-2 lead. Brossart mounts a seventh-inning comeback with two two-out run-scoring singles by left-fielder Katie Reis and centerfielder Riley Orth. Harrison then wins it in bottom of seventh with run-scoring single by the pitcher (someone can fill in her name)...her fourth hit of the game. Nice game...think it shows Brossart can compete with some of these teams mentioned to contend for the 10th Region. Still a few too many mental mistakes that extends innings that lead to runs.
  18. Final from Pete Noll. Just couldnt recover from 7-run first inning.
  19. Those conditions were just awful for softball last night. BBHS still has to make plays defensively and not give extra outs in an inning. Conditions were the same for both teams but I don't know how they kept their hands warm. Good win for the Birds as they played much better through the elements. Both teams are much better in warmer weather. Graybill's bombs were impressive with the wind blowing in.
  20. probably had a thread on this before, but would it make sense to flip the softball/baseball seasons with soccer? softball...the girls are coming off their travel teams and would seem to be in season's form...it's not as wet in the fall as it is in spring. Soccer plays in rain & cold, but when is the "peak" Select Soccer seasons? In softball/baseball, the colder weather has so much more of an impact on the hands (batting, pitching, throwing) than it seems a soccer player would have to deal with in the same cold temperatures. But i guess the argument could be said that in the spring we really only have to deal with the cold weather occassionally...it was 60+degrees last weekend.
  21. SK is young and small this year, and they may take some lumps; but they have some very nice talent coming up in the next few years. Their pitchers get another year of experience and strength/maturity, and they will have a very nice nucleus to build around.
  22. Saw these young ladies on Channel 19 this morning, getting some great recognition on the local TV. Congratulations to HC and it is most definitely something that they will cherish and remember forever. it'll take years for that feeling to go away and every time they look at the banner hanging...they can talk about this accomplishment. Best in the state this year when it all mattered....
  23. I never saw NDA play this year. Did they graduate their PG from last year or did she get hurt? If so, the way you phrase your question of attributing the first round loss to the PG seems harsh. Teams have to rebuild...I don't attribute that to the PG...I would attribute it to rebuilding and gaining experience or doing the best with what you have. This is a bad example but if HC doesn't make it out of their district next year are you going to attribute it to their C next year who might only be 5'9" instead of 6'2"?
  24. I know he's taking shots...got caught up on the basketball thread. I'd build my infield around either HHS or NCC's shortstop. Now, HC's shortstop from two years ago...different story. I see UK's motivation now....I will put much less stock in his opinion's now...
