  1. Bunting would be the key for Stubbs absolutely. He would cause some havoc. I just finished setting up my fantasy baseball leagues that I am running and printing out my Reds schedule to hang in my room.
  2. 1) Yes. 2) I believe they can, but not based purely on their Muslim faith or their lack thereof. I just don't believe that religion is a precursor to any afterlife. It is my personal belief that some of the most judgmental and hateful people that I know claim to also be devoutly religious. The two don't always necessarily go hand-in-hand, but I just believe that if there is an afterlife (which not one, single, human being on this earth can possibly be positively certain about), you get their by how you live your life -- not what temple or mosque or church you walk into once a week. 3) The notion that people are excluded from an afterlife or doomed to an eternally painful one based on religion [which I argue is based on parental influences (which is based on location)] is ludicrous to me. Honestly, is it just luck of the draw then? That is just illogical, in my own very humble opinion. Some background on the religious influences that had an impact on my life: I attended a Catholic grade school for the first 9 years of my true education. I attended an all-male Catholic high school called Covington Catholic for the next 4 years of my education. I have a family that is almost entirely Roman Catholic, and I come from an area of Kentucky I would assume is very Catholic relative to the rest of the state (Kenton County). I attend Mass when I can, and I consider myself a member of the Catholic Church.
  3. Do you think you would be a Christian if you were born in Afghanistan?
  4. Exactly. The only reason the parents influence the children the way that they do is because they were taught that way, IMO. I think the general consensus so far is that we'd all be saying Christians are going to Jahannam if we were Muslims. So what's the point? It's finger-pointing non-sense to me.
  5. I will GLADLY take a 3.5% margin of victory spread. You've got yourself a deal. Here's to Romney +3.5%! Heck, I'll even give you the push. I'll take Romney + (
  6. Is that an answer to the thread title or to all 47 questions I posed in my much too long post above?
  7. I have really enjoyed the politics and religion forum since I discovered it, and I have a question. I've read what I consider to be some interesting opinions on religion. I read a post a while back about the thought that Muslims and Jews are destined to Hell. It got me thinking if the very people who claim that believe that they themselves would be Muslims and Jews if they were born there. Here's my question: Would you be a Muslim if born in Herat, Afghanistan? Would you practice Hinduism if you were born in Allahabad, India? Would you practice Buddhism if you were born near the Shansi caves in China, and so on? Or, alternatively, would you have sought out the religion to which you now believe to be the true proclaimer of that which is unseen? This is obviously all here-say and speculation, but I'm curious to hear what you think.
  8. :notworthy: It's time the archaic and outdated homophobic sentiment of our country goes away. Just grow up, and suck it up. I've posed this question a million times, and I'll pose it here. Who is it hurting if gays get married? Just don't pay attention. The old, "But the Bible says..." argument is just as archaic and stupid. The Bible also says, "You shall not round off the side-growth of your heads nor harm the edges of your beard." (Leviticus 19:27).
  9. You aren't putting yourself out on the line enough with this bet. Put out a margin of victory in percentage terms, and I'll get in on the action!
  10. Econ professor I have for intermediate macro was talking a lot about how a large portion of these positive numbers is seasonal adjustments and the fact that they still receive weight, despite the very mild winter we've experienced. Another large factor has been re-padding of Japanese demand/supply since the tsunami. Many firms scaled back largely as a result of that. Take it FWIW.
  11. I'm 21 years old, and I certainly have no exposure to the man besides American history classes. The Red Scare was a very interesting time to me from a historical perspective, and I'd love to hear what he'd have to say about today's world.
  12. Great thread idea. I really like it. 1. Donald Draper from Mad Men 2. Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights 3. Holden Caufield from Catcher in the Rye 4. Michael Berg from The Reader
  13. Tough to say, really--especially with Tom Brady. IMO, when it comes to less than 30 seconds (and no timeouts), I think it's ALWAYS better to give them the option with less time. Especially when the other option is a 37 second differential with a timeout. Just my opinion. It would take some Tebow-like luck for them to get 50+ yards down field in 20 seconds, spike the ball, and set up a game-winning field goal.
  14. Different sports. Baseball is defined as America's greatest pastime for its intricacies. FWIW, I wholeheartedly agree with you on the baseball front. But also, I doubt anyone would say in a post-game thread after a regular season match-up between these two teams with the exact same game played out, "Wow what a game!" I think the situation and score-line gives the illusion of a superb game. That's just my take, though.
  15. All I'm saying is fingers crossed they don't end up in UK's bracket. They or UNC would be a nightmare as a 2-seed.
  16. Longest play from scrimmage was 38 yards, and the next longest was 24 yards. The chess match at the end of the game was weirdly played out, and quite frankly boring (I guess Belichick changed his mind after the first timeout?). 4 touchdowns scored, 3 of which were in my opinion, legitimate. Those are the three main reasons it just wasn't anything to write home about. I'm about as big of a fan of the NFL as anyone. I pull for no particular team. I can DVR a game (especially a championship game) and easily re-watch it a few days later. Not a chance I would pencil in a time to watch that game. Maybe some on here would, but not me. Guess I need to find another sport to watch, though.
  17. Just wasn't that great of a game to watch, honestly. Eli Manning is one of the best in the league, and he proved it again tonight.
  18. Peyton Manning cleared to play by 2 different specialists. One says he could play THIS Sunday. Great news for Manning. Couldn't be happier for him -- there are few class acts in sports nowadays, and he will always be revered by me as a true competitor and class act.
  19. I agree with you that Tool is genre-less. I'm seeing Puscifer in March (I think? -- they're coming to the Taft). I saw APC twice last year and Tool multiple times before that. I'm a big Maynard fan. Back to the topic, I can definitely see what you're saying there. I just thought you were basically saying that the progression of rock has actually been a digression, rather than you saying that it's becoming fragmented into sub-genres. That was my fault.
  20. Ever listened to A Perfect Circle? That'll change your mind. Maynard's best project.
