  3. T announcers getting upset? That's classy!
  4. I know Drew McDonald has a very good game. He's at an age where the Musselman-Dunne, Kentucky State Junior, and the Junior PGA Series will be great experience for him. I probably should include the AJGA too but my son never played in one of the their tourneys. It's good to see promising talent in Northern Kentucky. Hopefully, one of our teams will bring the state trophy home one of these days. I'm looking forward to the state tourney!
  5. So, we won't be able the answer the Drew McDonald question this year. I don't see him on the State tee sheet. In the meantime, Blake Hamilton won the 7th Region Tournament. That's his 4th medal of the year! That's much better than two Ryle alumni playing D1 golf right now (Cody Martin/UK and Andrew Desmarais/Cincinnati). At the end of the day, I believe that Justin Thomas is the hands-on favorite (he's on the tee sheet). Hunter Stewart and David Snyder should challenge as well. I would look for Nate Johnson to do score well too. Cameron Beal might be up there too. 1. Justin Thomas 2. Hunter Stewart 3. David Snyder 4. Blake Hamilton 5. Nate Johnson 6. Cameron Beal (t-15th last year) 7. Todd McDaniel (t-11 last year) 8. Fred Allen Myer (t-22 last year) 9. ?? 10. ??
  6. Bowling Green Country Club (again) - thanks to sponsorship by their local Buick dealer
  7. If KHSAA follows the same method for tee times as last year, I'm predicting that Ryle and Mason County boys will tee off together Friday a.m. Should be fun!
  8. Region 7 (Northern Kentucky) had their regional today. Congrats to Covington Catholic who claimed the regional championship. Ryle and Cooper tied for 2nd and went into a play-off. Congratulations to Ryle who won on the 2nd playoff hole. This is the 8th year in a row that the Region will be represented by Ryle and CovCath. Three guys then had a play-off for the final two individual qualifier spots. Congratulations to Adam Millson (Cooper), Austin Molen (Cooper) and Jason Rose (Dixie Heights) for making it through to State. I believe there are a lot of fingernails on the course after the play-offs -- lots of nail biting moments.
  9. I believe you have to look at more than one tournament to make the call on who is top in the state. Blake Hamilton has won 3 tournaments this season. And, just because Blake beat Justin Thomas in one tournament, it doesn't mean that Blake is top in the country (as is Justin). While Drew McDonald plays very well, I would not put him in the top 10 in the state. After Drew shows success at the high school level over time, I'll then put him in the top 10. My 2 cents!
  10. Yes, this is for the Northern Kentucky Athletic Conference (NKAC) -- it includes at least 2 of the KHSAA Regions for golf.
  11. Ties are not common in high school golf. In 9-hole matches, they can happen. In tournaments, there are play-offs for 1st / 2nd.
  12. My son played with Fred Allen Meyer at the State tournament - even though he was very young (8th grade?), he played and behaved like a champion.
  13. Sorry - I didn't mean to imply that LCA shot low because the course was short. Instead, my assertion is that other teams couldn't shoot that low from the red tees.
  14. Outstanding! Can any other team come close? From the red tees? That has to be some kind of team record.
  15. I believe Cooper is stronger than Ryle this year. Ryle has Blake Hamilton who is arguably the best player in Northern Kentucky; however, the team will include at least 3 8th or 9th graders. Cooper gave CovCath a scare in Region last year and return all of their players. CovCath has the most experience but was inconsistent last year.
  16. I disagree with you. #10 and #11 played very difficult. #10 played into the wind and up-hill - played about 250 yards. #10 green is sloped quite a bit as I saw a putt break 6 feet (from 15 feet). Many pins were on ridges and near the edge of the green. I questioned the legality of some of the pin placements. Several of the par 4's were over 400 yards. Don't forget the wind wasn't consistent in either strength or direction. The course was wet and yielded no roll. Scores would have been higher but they played the ball up (within a scorecard). Some very good golfers scored very high. I guess you needed to be there. It definitely surprised me.
  17. The top 3 finishers from last year's state tournament are returning -- David Payne (StX), Travis Thompson (Marshall County), and Justin Thomas. I believe Justin will run away with the individual title. Payne, Thompson, Dagon Adbon, and Jordan Erlewine could contend. Paul Sansom played well this summer in the PGA Junior Series and Matthew Anderson are outside chances. As for the team title, it should be a one team show -- St X is heavily favored in my book. LCA and Greenup should take 2nd/3rd. West Jessamine could do well but they're very young. Trinity and St Mary's could also do well.
  18. Ryle graduated 2 players last year that now play D-I college golf (Cody Martin - UK, and Andrew Desmarais - Cincinnati). I would say that Jordan Erlewine could contend for the individual title. Jordan finished 17th 3 years ago in Bowling Green and 24th last year. More importantly, he's playing well right now. I predict Ryle will make the team cut and finished around 8th. 4th would be an exceptional finish for this team.
  19. So, that's what we thought a week ago. I would've betted the winning team score was 290 or less. But they had the pins in very nasty positions - the pro said he had never seen it setup so hard. Plus, the wind shifted and gusted all day. So, I was shocked that there were only 6 scores below 80 (on a par 70 course no less).
  20. KHSAA site is updated with only Region 8 qualifiers. Region 8 Winner Pendleton County 312 Grade Lane Weaver 73 9 Phoenix Ramsey 75 11 Tim Cooper 75 12 Nick Jones 89 12 Steven Auchter 96 11 Region 8 Runner-Up Mason County 325 Grade Eric White 82 12 Jackson Frame 88 8 Tanner Walton 79 10 Josh Harris 91 10 Bradley LItzinger 76 10 Individual Qualifiers (Top 3 Not on qualifying team) Golfer School Score Grade Zach Wright Grant County 71 11 Russell Rigg St. Patrick 73 11 Eric Sanders Harrison County 76 11 Congrats to all!
  21. Who qualified as individuals? Thanks!
  22. Congratulations to Ryle and Covington Catholic who finished 1st and 2nd respectively in the 7th Region tournament today. This is the umpteenth year that Ryle and CovCath will represent the region at State. Ryle dominated the day with individual finishes of 1st, 2nd, T-3rd, and T-5th - 4 of the 6 scores in the 70's. Senior Jordan Erlewine from Ryle won Medalist honors with an even par 70 -- his 2nd regional medal. Senior Chris Lally from Ryle captured 2nd with a 75. Ryle shot a team total of 302. CovCath finished with a 330, 2 strokes ahead of a young Cooper High School team. They moved the 7th Region tournament to an easier course this year; however, the winds howled from different directions all day. Scores ended in the high range once again - except for Ryle. Also, congratulations to the individual qualifiers: Drew Kinman, Beechwood, 78 Blake Adkins, Dixie Heights, 79 Holden Rea, Gallatin County, 80 :dancingpa
  23. As my final thought on this topic, Nick played for Holy Cross today in the 7th Region Tournament. He shot 89 in very windy conditions.
  24. Found the results! Teams 1. Lexington Christian Academy 299 2. Christian Academy of Louisville 308 3. North Oldham 315 4. Lexington Catholic 315 5. St. Xavier OH 315 6. St. Xavier KY 319 7. That's a very good round on a tough course. Congrats!
  25. Has anyone seen results from the Steve Flesch Invitational? CovCath hosted it and featured teams from Kentucky and from Ohio (Cincinnati). CovCath's website says they shot 332 and finished 10th but I can't find other results. Thanks!
