H.S. Golf State Tourney - LCA a runaway - Who for Individual Champ?

Featured Replies

LCA will win the Boy's State Golf Tourney! Who are the 10 players that can win the State Championship as an individual???

Did LCA play in the Steve Flesch Invitation this past Saturday at Boone Links in Florence ? In Know that St. X won the tournament by a 10+ stroke margin, and Blake Hamilton of Ryle High School took Medal honors with a nice round of 70 (-2) for the day. The previous weekend, Blake won medal honors playing in the Madison Central Tournament played at The Bull in Richmond, Ky, posting an even par round. In regards to your top 10 players, I think he should be included.

Well you better watch out for the 8th grader from NCC!! He just won the conference Tourney, beating Blake Hamilton. Drew McDonald is the young man i am speaking of. He then went into a playoff, really not sure who that was against and won the playoff.

So I guess you can add one more name to the top 10 players in the state in the individual category.

They did, but here in the kicker: they played their number 4,5,6,7 and 8 players. They got 2nd behind St. X. Their number 1,2,3,9 and 10 players played at Rowan Counties tournament at Eagle Trace. They also got 2nd. At Eagle Trace they had to count an 84 and they still shot 2 under as a team!!!

West Jessamine is the team they will have to watch out for. They have won two tournaments in a row (Montgomery Co. and Rowan Co.). They shot 4 under as a team at Rowan Co.

How has the 8th grader fared against the players from LCA, ST X, West Jess, David Snyder, Will Bishop, the McDaniel boys from Clay Co. ETC??

Well, when they play I will let you know. The comparison was against Blake Hamilton, so if he is to be considered one of the top players in the state than, Drew McDonald should be considered as one also. How did Blake fare against that competiton? If he has played them than this should give you some idea on how young Mr. McDonald may do.

Does that answer your question?

I believe you have to look at more than one tournament to make the call on who is top in the state. Blake Hamilton has won 3 tournaments this season. And, just because Blake beat Justin Thomas in one tournament, it doesn't mean that Blake is top in the country (as is Justin). While Drew McDonald plays very well, I would not put him in the top 10 in the state. After Drew shows success at the high school level over time, I'll then put him in the top 10. My 2 cents!

Not Really. We are discussing the State Tourney in BG next week. The difference is this is one of those big tourney's the kids in this state get jacked up about. The other difference is standing up on that tee box and looking at a Justin Thomas, Hunter Stewart, David Snyder, Will Bishop and many more and not Wilting ON The Vine. That's what I am talking about when I talk about the Top 10 in the STATE.

So, we won't be able the answer the Drew McDonald question this year. I don't see him on the State tee sheet.

In the meantime, Blake Hamilton won the 7th Region Tournament. That's his 4th medal of the year! That's much better than two Ryle alumni playing D1 golf right now (Cody Martin/UK and Andrew Desmarais/Cincinnati).

At the end of the day, I believe that Justin Thomas is the hands-on favorite (he's on the tee sheet). Hunter Stewart and David Snyder should challenge as well. I would look for Nate Johnson to do score well too. Cameron Beal might be up there too.

1. Justin Thomas

2. Hunter Stewart

3. David Snyder

4. Blake Hamilton

5. Nate Johnson

6. Cameron Beal (t-15th last year)

7. Todd McDaniel (t-11 last year)

8. Fred Allen Myer (t-22 last year)

You are correct. Young Mr. McDonald did not do well in the Regional Tourney. So to include him in this years top 10 in the state may be a bit premature, but I would keep my eye on this young man. He has a GREAT future ahead of him. Hopefully, NCC will step up their comptetition via scheduling over the next few seasons to challenge not only Drew but his teammates for better showings in the future. Still not a bad year for this young man. But again, just one persons opinion.

Good luck to the young men at the State tourney.

I know Drew McDonald has a very good game. He's at an age where the Musselman-Dunne, Kentucky State Junior, and the Junior PGA Series will be great experience for him. I probably should include the AJGA too but my son never played in one of the their tourneys. It's good to see promising talent in Northern Kentucky. Hopefully, one of our teams will bring the state trophy home one of these days.

I'm looking forward to the state tourney!

Will Bishop (Dunbar) should be on everyone's list. Hager Collins and Chandler Fischer (LCA). Tyler McDaniel (Clay Co.). Cooper Musselman and Brendon Doyle (St X). All players that you could add to any list of high end competitors.

If you want to keep a true eye on the progress of young golfers across the state you can check out their scores on the Summer tours they play in. The Northern Ky 7Up tour and the Pepsi tour @ kjga.com are both age based. Remember that grade level is not a true indicator of age and is sometimes misleading. Mason Co has a true 7th grader (12) that will be worth watching as he grows.

he grows.

Hunter Stewart stood strong. He came in leading the all state points and runner up in 09. HUnter also played in the last group on the golf course. Now that is pressure. The Freshman from West Jessamine had a great tourney and a great year. He played in the last group with Hunter and held up quite well. Say what you will but playing in the last two groups on the final day is the real deal and comes with the crowd and pressure. Tournament golf is all in how you handle pressure. Playing 7 or 8 groups ahead of the final group sure takes the pressure OFF! Do you agree?
