Freshmen Christian Pollitt and Billy Miller should see varsity time for Silver Grove as well as returning starting infielder 8th grader Briley Seiter. I would suspect that both Pollitt and Seiter will log a bulk of the pitching innings for the JV squad (play after varsity games or on seperate days than the varsity).

Any input on schools like Boone County and Ryle? Do they carry younger players on their Freshman teams or are they 100% Freshman?

Last year's Ryle squad was all freshman as I recall and was also loaded with talent throughout their lineup. I think Boone was the same but I'm not as sure about the Rebels.

There's a Freshman catcher over at Cooper (Blake Roedersheimer) who's playing JV and is terrific. Receives the ball better than anybody I've seen at that age. Also blocks really well and is a terrific hitter. With a little experience and maturity is going to be really good.

Dropping down from 16U last summer, now a 15U team. Went 37-15 last summer at 16U, incredible bunch of kids

Ryle had at least one 8th grader playing for them last year - Alex Brownell. He's a big, strong player. I'm guessing there were others as well but I'm not sure how many.

Just hard for me to understand how a school of over 600 boys (or more) has to go into the Middle Schools to find players and that does include even if the 8th graders are that good! Did any of the current freshmen get cut?

Amazes me too. I don't know the exact number but I'm told about 12-15 current 9th graders were cut & about 8 play up on JV.

Not that is what ticks me off. Why do you cut freshmen players (yea even if they are just so so players) and then allow 8th graders to play. HS sports should be for HS students and I honestly and truthfully don't care how good the 8th grader is. To cut students of the HS to allow kids who don't attend that HS is just wrong.

 

BTW if I had a home schooled child and I lived in Conner district, I would demand that my child of HS age get to play at Conner and why not! There is no difference from the kid in the 8th grade attending Conner Middle School playing for Conner than a kid getting homed schooled that could attend Conner.

 

Neither kid attends Conner HS, both kids could attend Conner HS but don't currently don't and both kids live in the Conner School District. What the difference?

 

Now I have no problem if you need the 8th graders to play becasue of the lack of numbers but.....

It's getting the thread off topic and I don't lose sleep over it one way or the other but if you are running a program do you keep Freshman for one year and then cut them the next year when that better 8th grader gets to the high school or do you keep the 8th grader now and prepare him more for future years. IMO, if the Freshman is not better than the 8th grader then I take the 8th grader and if the Freshman puts in the work and gets better the next year maybe he will make the team.

 

It can be argued back and forth but that's my take.

Everything doesn't have to be about preparing kids for Varsity play. This is freshman ball and it should also be a little bit about participation. Although we are already 2/3 of the way through the school year, some freshman are still trying to see where they fit in at a school. Playing a freshman sport gives them a sense of commraderie and purpose, even if it is mostling sitting on the bench or pinch running. If you need the 8th graders to round out a roster, then great, include them. If you have enough freshman to field the team then the 8th graders should be excluded. They are obviously playing somewhere and preparing for high school with their summer teams.
