The KHSAA has set the rule, so if a coach is following the rules, why can't he choose a middle school kid? If they thought it was a problem, they would change the rule.

Regardless of who made the rule, and forgive my ignorance lol, the coaches are following the guidelines set for them. With the amount of very good select summer teams, quite honestly a lot of the eighth graders who play on them are crushing the freshman who have done nothing more than little league or knothole.

This is absolutely true. And those freshman that don't play much are mostly gone by the following year. Keeping a below average freshman over a very good 8th grader is doing a disservice to both kids. The 8th grader doesn't get the extra year of coaching and experience, and the freshman spends lots of not so quality time on the bench, and the team is not put in a position where it has the best chance to succeed.

This is a small list of kids who never played baseball as eight graders, from the 2009, 2010 and 2011 seasons and who are now playing College Baseball right now Isler of UC, Maile of UK, Darner of TMC, Nutini of TMC, Warning of Earlham, Shumate of Hanover, and Krumme of Bellamine none of them played baseball as an eight grader and are doing quite well right now in the NCAA be it Division I or II.

Don't know all the names (I'm still fairly new to NKY) but I know Maile and Shumate are Cov Cath kids, and Cov Cath doesn't allow 8th graders to play up. I don't know where they went to middle school (I know the youngest Maile goes to Turkeyfoot, don't know if Luke did or didn't), but I'm pretty sure there was no doubt about where they were going to high school. I'm pretty sure had their parents chosen to send them to public school, they would have played up as 8th graders. Is it a necessity to play freshman ball as an 8th grader to play in college??...absolutely not. It's arguably more important what summer league you play in....Southwest Ohio National and American gold leagues are definitely more competitive than freshman ball.

 

I know a lot of folks feel very strongly about this, and all make valid points. I'm not saying anyone is wrong, I just think you take the best available players chosen through a fair process (which isn't always a given). I do know this.....many teams wouldn't have freshman baseball, girls basketball, cross country and many other sports at the freshman level without middle schoolers.

I think this thread has gotten completely off topic and should be put to rest. I thought it was a topic about the freshman teams and players to watch not about how those who play on those teams are chosen

Actually state legislature set the rule and Ky Revised Stature on the matter. It was not the KHSAA who had the call here but our lovely elected officials who felt they needed to determine the matter

Basically, krs states no body except Ky Board of Ed or its designee cannot prevent 4th graders or up for trying out for varsity team.

 

Lydia Gumm will be trying to make her 10th state tournament in girls' golf in 2012-13.

This is spot on. Go watch one of the elite summer teams in this area that these 8th grade kids play on. There are only 3 14U teams that compete on a national level around here, The Cincy Flames, The Riverbats, and The Midland Tomahawks. There are actually 2 NKY kids on the Tomahawks, one of which I know his family well. He was recently listed as one of the Top 50 14U players in the country by Travel Ball Select- yes that kind of stuff is crazy but it's out there- and say what you want about stuff like that, but this kids goal is to play D1 college baseball, and that kind of pub and exposure cannot be bad, and he would not get that by playing freshman baseball (or JV/Varsity) as a frosh. By the time school ball is over, these kids will have played against the best of the best, many against teams from the south which, as a whole, are just simply better because they never stop playing. We have been lucky around here this year, but usually HS/Frosh ball is a battle against the elements and not the greatest comp.

If I had to guess, I would say Ethan Stringer from Twenhofel, who has been discussed on BGP. I'm not sure who the other NKY kid is that plays on the Tomahawks. I know Andrew Trame played for the Tomahawks last year, but he is playing on Scott's freshman team this year.....as an 8th grader.

Andrew is Jeff's son. He and Ethan played together for years on the NKY Braves in the Southwest Ohio league, along with a few other kids on Scott's freshman team. Jeff was the head coach of that team.
