In 1A I would think that the defending state champion and state runner-up being out of the playoffs after the second and third rounds respectively was definitely upsets. Especially the way that Beechwood lost to LCA by 22 points and Danville getting shut out by Bardstown.

1. North Laurel over Madison Central (talk about a shocker)

2. Sheldon Clark over Leslie County (wow)

3. Lex Cath over Bowling Green (not the outcome necessarily, but the margin)

4. Trinity over St Xavier (X was supposed to be unbeatable and had already defeated the Rocks handily in the regular season but Trinity got the last laugh in that rivalry)

5. Holmes' dominating win over Conner (who was down this season, but I am not sure anyone predicted this one)

6. Lynn Camp over Whitley County (had not beaten them in years and Whitley was supposed to be back on track, what a huge win for the 1A team over their 4A rival)

Just a few that come to mind.

North Laurel, in a year in which they struggled mightily, handing Madison Central their first district loss in four years.

There were several big ones, but I agree that this was the biggest one. North had no Blair who they relied on for 2 years for nearly 4,000 offensive yards and around 50 TD's and let's be honest here he WAS the Jags offense for the better part of 3 seasons, the loss of the O line anchor in Ky All Star Collins and 2-3 other starting linemen, their big D1 gun, Cessna injured in the 2nd game, several new coaches including the head man, several other injuries, nearly every loss was by 1 score or less and to good teams, the tragic loss of 2 close friends, a new offense, etc. Yet somehow in a season when they so often were 1 play away from being a 1-2 loss team instead of 3-7, they found a way to pull off the most unlikely of upsets. It showed me something about the heart of those kids and that coaching staff as they didn't seem to lose any numbers thru all they dealt with. This is a very positive sign for the Jaguars program for the future. I think that this win showed the kids what they can accomplish and will give Coach Abbott and his kids something to build on. If a coach can get his team who has been thru so much to give that sort of effort, imagine how good they will be when they grow into the program he and his staff are trying to put into place. Looking at what is coming back and they way those younger kids stepped up at the end of the season, they could be a huge surprise in 2006.

I think the upset by Sheldon Clark of Leslie County in what was supposed to be a rebuilding year for SC and a power year full of experienced players at LC who had done something not done since Couch's time as an Eagle was huge as well.

Give some love to Lynn Camp as well for their ending of the 15 year losing streak to Whitley County, a game which have been the final straw that ended Coach Campbell's long and very successful run as the Colonel's head man.

I agree with Gish. The Prestonsburg Blackcats were the biggest disappointment in 2a. Unfortunately for Pburg, they will continue to struggle. Sheldon Clark has replaced Pburg as the top competition for the Pirates in district 8. After losing Shaffer, Hamilton, Peters, and a couple of their best lineman, any Pburg fan who tells you they expect to compete for a regional title is probably wearing red and black colored glasses.

If Prestonsburg continues to struggle as they did this past season, look for John Derrossett to feel some legitimate heat. Belfry has won the last SEVEN games against the Blackcats, and although Hughs is a decent QB, he will not be able to turn the tables during his tenure at PHS.
