I haven't seen them before last night, but NCC is a well above average 3 point shooting team, I couldn't figure out why they tried to start out in a 2-3. NCC made 5 3's in the first 9 minutes before they switched but they were already down 11 at that point...

I show them at shooting over 41% as a team from behind the arc. Led by Ryan at 47% and Bueter at 41%. Those two sharp shooters take most of the teams attempts.

Bueter is always good for the 3s. Congrats on the win, Breds!

I agree, I am all about scheduling tougher competition to make you better for Districts but stepping up to Div 2 may have been a little more than they can chew.

Michael Beuter is an excellent basketball player. I have watched him since he was in 4th grade and he has a nice hesitation move to get past his defender and has one of the smartest Basketball IQ's in the state. He is a sharpshooter who will only get better. Guard play is the key to winning the Region and NCC has 2 of the best in Higthchew and Beuter.

What does that have to do with this thread? They have gotten beat by just about everyone else and scoring 27 points is somewhat embarrassing.

 

That was a nice win for the Beechies but Newport is one of those teams who can either show up and play with anyone in the Region or not show up and get beat like a drum.

As Clyde likes to point out, football players picking up a basketball. A big part of Beechwood's success the past few years along with great coaching by Shumate is they have at least one, if not two guards, who focused completely on basketball and can shoot with the best of them. Fangman, Hall, Beuttel, Romes ... Beechwood doesn't have anyone like that this year. Without looking at the shooting stats, I would guess they are in the 30%'s somewhere as a team shooting percentage. If you can see the quarter by quarter box scores, you will probably see in many games a quarter where they score 2 or 4 points. Add in turnover issues and it can be ugly. They are a very offensively challenged team. If Estrella gets open looks and is having a good night, then they can hang in there against tougher opponents. Beechwood has to hope as the season goes on and the football players get more court time that the shooting gets better.

 

If I were the coach, I would continue to press and try to get easy baskets off turnovers. Otherwise, slow the game down and try to use the one advantage that Beechwood should have against almost every team in the region - size. Beechwood can go 6'5" across the back line. There are very few teams in region 9 this year that can put two 6'5" guys on the court at the same time, let alone 3. I would put the big boys on the block, find the mismatch and pound it inside every trip down the court. Put Maus at the high post and hope he finds his shooting touch again. Kick it back out to Estrella if they double down and hope he hits the open 3. And if I didn't say it enough, do a lot of hoping for improvement offensively.

I understand the football part but we are midway through January and although I still see footballers struggling to make open looks they should be making adjustments like you said to try and compete. Put the big boys on the block and pound it or get Nussbaum and some of those guys pressing and trying to create turnovers. What do you have to lose? They have the athletes, sounds like the chemistry just isnt there and the shots arent falling.

That really is the key if they are going to have any success the rest of the way. IMO, they need to get McKenzie more playing time and try to get him the ball down low. Maus really doesn't like to bang down low even though he is 6'5". Maus has always had a great shooting touch on the mid range shot but he appears to have lost his confidence shooting the ball. I would work Cruse and McKenzie in the low post and Maus flashing to the high post.
