It's very simple, he voted against a law that said if you used an illegally possessed firearm in self-defense you would not be punished for owning said firearm. That is fundamentally and irreducibly not the same thing as voting against a right to protect yourself and in no way would prosecute anyone for the act of defending themselves.

Some of the best stress relief I know is going out on a friends farm and shooting guns. Call me crazy but it sure does take me away from this crazy world. I was taught to shoot when I was eight. Taught my daughter when she was 10. Took her rabbit hunting the first time when she was 11. She's 22 and I can call her and say we're going shooting Sunday afternoon. 4 out of 5 times she drives two hours for two or three hours of target practice. In this crazy world I think its a very good idea to know how to handle firearms.

I've already said many times no, I don't think it should be illegal, but that's up to the states/cities/communities to decide. And if the laws where a person resides mean that it's illegal, then it's illegal. You also open up the ability for a criminal to protect themselves by claiming self defense.

100% incorrect on what the bill he opposed said. I can't make it any simpler. It deals strictly with the issue of exceptions for self-defense WHEN there is a local gun ordinance banning guns.
