Pretty big surprise in the 45th District/12th Region tonight. I didn't make it to the game and all I know is the score. Good win to open district play for the Lions. :thumb:

Garrard had struggled early in the season to find offense. They've been limited by not having a true point guard. Shooting guard Austin Sebastian has been playing PG and doing a decent job, for the good of the team, but he is out of position. I know Boyle has also had some offensive struggles so far, but they have also played a challenging schedule. I felt like Garrard could compete with Boyle, but I wasn't sure they could go there and win.

Garrard moved Abney to the point, and that really changed it all for the Lions. Garrard also played a zone the whole game and completely killed the Boyle Princeton style attack. Great game by both teams though! Good to see Garrard get back to the winning track!

Nice move with Abney. He isn't a true point either, but he does distribute it well, makes smart decisions and he's very strong with the ball. That will allow Sebastian to get freer looks from the perimeter. I'm glad Coach Cooper and his staff made that change!

Garrard shot 67% from the floor for the game and was 12-15 for 80% in the second half. Boyle shot 28% from the floor for the game. There you have it.

Doesn't matter who you play if you can't score then you will lose. Pretty simple process.

Those are our expectations. What are the boys expectations and how exactly do they plan on on fulfilling those expectations? That's my question.

Boyle County is averaging only 54 points per game. Is their low scoring due to poor offensive skill or the offensive system that they run?

Both. I don't recall many if any teams under Coach Adams averaging more than 60 points per game. If they did it wasn't more than 63 points I'm certain. We simply struggle on offense. Micah Satterly is in the worst shooting slump I have ever seen him have in his whole life but he has to keep shooting. Michael Arnett plays hide and seek in games too much. Kyle Rice has always been a streaky scorer. Brett Jones is probably our best 3 point shooter on paper and is still getting comfortable with pulling the trigger in a senior dominated lineup. Tommy Hastings has never been someone we look to for scoring. Same with Zach Hester and Lloyd Hall. Devin True simply looks lost when he is on the court and Aram Martin will contribute one day when finds the confidence within himself to perform up to his capabilities and when he gets serious in the weight room. Aram simply needs some strength and confidence and he'll be fine. I'd love to see much more playing time to Hagen Tyler. He has no conscience. He will shoot first and ask questions later and unlike everyone else on the team(save for Brett Jones and Michael Arnett....when they actually shoot the ball) when Hagen shoots it the ball goes in.

 

I really can't put my finger on what the problem is. I don't know if the boys hate each other, hate the coach, just don't care. I don't know. I do know they have failed to live up to expectations so far and that is on them. I am tired of hearing parents complaining about the coaches, their kids playing time, who's playing and who isn't....blah blah blah. It ain't the coach, people. He's not the one missing layups, wide open jumpers, free throws and not playing defense. That's the players.

 

The only thing I'd do different is press more but we aren't deep enough to press a whole game without having the boys dead to the world in February so there you have it. When the boys make it up in their heads to put their best foot forward things will change. I simply haven't seen it yet. Not as one collective unit I haven't.

 

That or we simply aren't as good as we thought we were and I don't believe that. Yet.

What's crazy is that Garrard County has just as much all around "talent" as anyone in the district, but one thing that has been killing Garrard in all of their games is

execution. When Garrard executes and rebound the ball effectively, it is no question in my mind that they can play with anyone in this region. Boyle didn't play very well at all, but did enough to stay in the game. I'm proud of the Lions for pulling one out. Boyle will be just fine.
