They lost a lot of scoring in Jamal Crawford and Johnson is never going to be a number one guy. Unless they get two or three solid contributors outside of Johnson a night the Hawks will never be anything more than they are right now. Barkley went on and on about it last night but in a way he is right, they have zero toughness and not enough big man depth. You could see how the game changed when Ivan Johnson came in, he got physical with Bosh and well got physical with everyone really. His impact on the game shouldn't go unnoticed becaused the Heat were cruising by ten or so until he came in, once he came in the game changed. If they could just find a couple more big bodies than can actually score and free up Horford to play more 4 and Smith to play more 3 the Hawks have the possibility of being decent. Their time is running out though because Johnson is 30 and will most likely never live up to his newly signed deal, and they don't really have the funds to make too big of splash so they're going to have to find some way to get a couple more players in there if they ever want to do anything.

 

 

On the flip side I think this game says a lot about how good the Heat can be. Really good sign to be without Wade and Lebron on the road and still get the W. Bosh had a huge game and not only scored from a variety of spots on the floor but also got in there a little bit and mixed it up inside. Bosh was highly criticized last season but anyone who watched the game last night or watched Bosh play in Toronto where he was the primary option knows the dude can play ball and is one of the best 4's in the league. Miami's problem last season was they needed that banger underneath, someone who is going to pull boards and be a monster inside. That is what they needed to compliment Bron and Wade at that point, and they were not getting that. Bosh is not that kind of player, does not mean he's not good, just means he's not that player. Hopefully with Haslem healthy this season and Pittman getting minutes they can find that banger inside and free up Bosh to do what he is capable of doing without hurting the Heat's chances of not just winning but winning a championship.

In truth, I'm just glad I wasn't crazy. I don't know if Rubio can be a true franchise guy, but he sure can be a really good PG. He's a better shooter than I would have expected.
