Not sure he ever gave real consideration to going to Holmes at this late stage of his high school career. Not sure Ludlow would just turn a blind eye to that one and I'm sure other teams in the region would have objected loudly. May not have ever stepped on the floor for the Dogs. Would have been another Mitchell type situation. He actually gave more consideration to returning to live with his family down around Corbin and attending Lynn Camp. As a Senior I think Dan realized it would be more trouble then it's all worth.

First of all let me say I think there is no chance Penick plays any lower than Division 1 next year. But just b/c a kid gets letters from D 1 schools doesn't mean they will offer him a scholarship.

Yeah but i think Dan needs to be smarter than some of the other guys who have went on to play collage ball. Look at Tyler Jones i think that is what his name is from Grant Co.. He had a opportunity to play at some high D2 schools and get lots of playing time. instead he wanted to play the dream and went to Miami OH and never seen the floor. Ross Neltner instead of going to a smaller d1 or high D2 collage he took a chance went to LSU played a minor roll there and was getting recruited over top of.. now he is at Vandy. Mike Brock same way sees very little time at Eastern.... I think Dan needs to really think about making the choice of going to a D2 or a high D3 shchool. I would hate for him to go D1 and tranfer because he is not getting enough minutes.

Neltner bad example. He was Mr.Basketball and was probably going to start or get major minutes at LSU with Bass gone.

Bad post! The Penick kid is a good passer and decent ball handler. If we use our imaginations I'm sure that we could see him improving on some of these skills in college. Not every freshman plays appreciable minutes at the college level. At 6'9" and the strong frame that he already has he could certainly be a monster on the boards. He is already a better rebounder than any college player in Lexington this year. That is unless Transy has a big glass cleaner.

There is so much involved in selecting a college and most of it should be about things other than how much playing time you get as a frosh / soph.

Pennick is certainly D1 material. He does handle the ball well (not quite point guard quality though) and can already shoot the mid range jumper. He is also a good passer and not at all selfish. He is explosive off of the floor and certainly finishes on his drives to the hoop.

 

Big Stud makes a good point concerning the Volpenhein kid. Dan is a much better ball player than he was at this point. I have seen him dominate high school games and have also seen him lack the motivation and disappear on the court as well. I think some of that has to do with the schedule that Ludlow has to play for the conference and he is not challenged on a regular basis.

 

He must be hiding it pretty well looking at his stats in some of these games? 15 vs. Campbell, who really doesn't even have a true center sticks in my mind; and its not like Ludlow is loaded with scoring options and he's giving up shots to them?? Schedule not challenging enough?? If you're a 6' 9" high D-1 prospect, I'd hope you could dominate against the Belleviews, Daytons, Newports and Beechwoods of the world!! There is not doubt Tim grew and matured. He is a former teammate of mine. But I was just using him a comparison. The reason dan averages around 15 is because the coach doesn't run enough sets or force Penick to score in the post. Penick floats around the perimeter most of the game. Which is what he will do in college.

Dan certainly draws lots of attention from opposing defenses because of this. If (and when) he is surrounded by a better supporting cast he will have more opportunity to thrive.

I agree with EG when Dan gets a better team around him he will blossom into a very nice D-1 player.I compare him to Doellman at Xavier maybe not a star but a very good team player.Just because you are 6'9 and in high school doesn't mean you get every point and every rebound because there are other players out there.Some of you sound like you want Dan to average 30-20 every game.Did Jordan or Magic or Bird do this?no so just give the kid a break.Also he does hustle, Does Griffey look like he hustles all the time?no looks can be deceiving. And in my mind if you get a scholarship D-1 or not you are not a bust because you have made it, there are plenty of kids out there that won't get a scholarship for what ever reason.So Dan you just keep playing hard,and let the chips fall where they mayand that D-1 ticket will be there.

Michael Romes puts up numbers better than Penick with less of a height advantage and an equal supporting cast and a similar schedule. I am not saying that Romes is a better prospect, but Penick's subpar numbers (for a D-1 prospect) can not be blamed on his teammates and other teams focusing on him.

:confused: A very good ball handler and an excellent passer. Although the Panthers have not played well Dan had a very nice Tournament at Campbell Cty and the one thing several people mentioned is the very thing you mention. Excellent passer and sees the floor well.
