Mayfield 44 Louisville Holy Cross 0

Congratulations to the Cardinals; sounds like it was a very impressive game while going through the update thread.

Great win Cards. Holy Cross was supposed to be better than last year but that wasn't the case.

We better stop the turn overs and the penalties or our season will be over next week.

Holy Cross was huge. Looked like a Murray State Line. Mayfield was just way way better than them. Those Lit ratings were right on the number. LHC looked like they were getting very frustrated out there, lots of extra action going on. Mayfield passed and ran the ball equally well and the defense was just suffocating.

Holy Cross had their 1st team offense in the game vs our JV and couldn't score.

Impressive.

Score could have been worse as Mayfield fumbled on the HC 1 yd line as Jackson was trying to get that extra yard and score and then Jackson just dropped another ball when he was switching the ball from 1 hand to the other and they were pretty deep in HC territory on that one. The Mayfield defense needs to get alot of credit in this one as they consistently dropped the HC runners for losses, setting up 2nd and 3rd downs with long yardage. As big as HCs line was, they had no answer for Mayfields DL, as they were getting off the ball so quick before the HC OL had time to block them and they did alot of slanting to offset the size difference. Guhy sounded very impressive with his throwing and Jackson had to have 150 yds or more running. HC had a couple of decent drives early in the game, but, were shut down in the 2nd half by a stiffling Cardinal defense that were in the HC backfield before they could even hand or pitch the ball off on many occassions. Mayfield did commit way too many penalties and had 4-5 fumbles and they'll need to shore that up next week, but, you sure can't be disappointed by the effort and final score. Pretty impressive stuff.

Bring on Beechwood! They get their wish!

After LHC scored the 1st 14 pts last year , Mayfield has scored 103 straight points on them.

Complete domination. Holy Cross had 6 first downs at half, and 3 of those were by penalties. I really thought that their line was supposed to be overpowering and that was not the case at all. Cardinals were in the backfield a lot of times before the QB even handed the ball off! Cardinals were very balanced as well. I could not believe that HC did not abandon the run after they went down 30 to 0, obviously they figured they could not pass effectively, but still, what was their goal? To win or just score a touchdown or two? And, extra activity is putting it mildly, I could say a lot more about that but i'll bite my tounge! Ridiculous!!!

Just another case were the opposing team's offense went missing in action. It doesn't matter if Mayfield scores 21, 42, 63, etc. Defense will get it done, red zone D is simply outstanding!

Cougars were not a team use to getting dominated and their frustration showed. I wouldn't expect to see excessive penalties and turnovers next week, in a game which undoubtedly will be closer.

Well, you all talk the talk and the boys walked the walk. We didn't help ourselves, you all where obviously ready.

As far as our o-line not having an answer for you d-line because came of the ball so fast, may be a bit of a stretch. Your coach used them smartly to get the linebackers in our backfield, and obviously it worked.

That is team loaded with athletes behind both lines. No doubt about it. Very well coached. I could see they were well coached, an example, the way your Wide Receivers blocked our Defensive Backs, the little things.

The boys earned you all the right to blow up this thread, enjoy!

Cards excel on ground, through air

Nov 19, 2011 | 11 views | 0 | 0 | | MAYFIELD — With Jonathon Jackson gaining ground quickly and Jake Guhy often hitting his receivers for big yardage, Mayfield turned its clash of offensive juggernauts with Louisville Holy Cross into a one-team showcase.

Jackson carried the ball 15 times for 179 yards and two touchdowns while Guhy completed 11 of 18 passes for 181 yards and another pair of scores in a 44-0 triumph in the Class A regional championship game Friday night at War Memorial Stadium.

The Cardinals will host Beechwood, a 51-19 winner over Frankfort, in next week’s state semifinals.

Holy Cross entered the game with sizable lines and an offense that had averaged around 40 points a game. Cardinals head coach Joe Morris knew his team could not take the direct approach in handling these visitors.

“We’ve got some guys who are very quick,” Morris said of his squad after the game. “We were moving those guys around, going left and right and in and out. If we tried to handle them straight up there was going to be some problems.”

Holy Cross had first possession, and the only problems Mayfield had were of its own making. The Cardinals held the Cougars to short yardage most plays, but penalties and one big catch were earning the guests several first downs. Holy Cross reached the red zone and threw into the end zone but Jordon Brown made the interception for the Mayfield touchback.

Guhy completed passes to William Higginson and Louis Love that put Mayfield in Holy Cross territory. Jackson’s first run netted six yards, but the second covered 32 yards and hit paydirt for the only touchdown Mayfield would need.

After the Cougars kicked the ball away after a safety, Love brought it back to the Holy Cross 47. Guhy made a short toss to Higginson, who scampered down the right side for another score and a 16-0 lead.

Higginson stopped another Cougar drive with an interception on the Mayfield 6 just before the half.
