November 7, 201114 yr Interesting piece in LHL today in regards to how the UK Board of Trustees hogties the athletic department in spending. OK, just read it. This article tells us nothing we didn't already know, and certainly does little to refute the fact that A) UK fans care more about basketball and B) If UK had historically bothered to fund football, maybe the football program could fund the rest of the athletics budgets like it does at big-time schools. Unless you're ready to tell me that Ohio State and Alabama and Florida just get it done by way of smoke and mirrors. What that leaves me to believe is one thing: UK's lack of interest in football, from a fan and an administration standpoint, means UK is OK with being seen as low-rent by the rest of the nation. Please don't act like "five straight bowl games" is some sort of badge of honor, because nobody cares about that in this day and age where you have to be absolutely putrid to not be invited to a bowl.

They clearly don't belong in the SEC anyway, given the overwhelming lack of interest in football from the UK fans. That they spend nearly as much on Midnight Madness as they do on their whole football recruiting budget says all you need to know about UK football. Really Jim? UK fans don't care? I guess the fine folks in Mississippi REALLY don't care about football. 2010 attendance stats (out of 12 SEC schools) Total attendance - 8th (ahead of Arkansas, Ole Miss, Miss St, Vandy) Average attendance - 9th (ahead of Ole Miss, Miss St, Vandy) Percentage of capacity - 7th (ahead of Tennessee, Arkansas, South Carolina, Ole Miss, Vandy) Oh... and those numbers are 23rd, 25th, and 31st nationally.
November 7, 201114 yr I would probably be a little careful up on my high horse if I were some people. As conference sizes increase, OOC rivalries will start to become the victims of a new college football landscape. I'm not saying that as a fan or not a fan, just stating something that seems pretty obvious to me.

I will not disagree with you that fans do support their team. The biggest arguement is that UK has settled for below average football way to long. There is no pressure put on the Administartion to be the best in football. UK has raised it ticket prices every year for the last five years and UK fans still pay the price. But I don't see UK fans kicking the doors in demanding them to go after a Coach that will get it done. I also don't see the admin. spending dollars on Football they way the need to to keep up in recruiting. Does anyone think Rich Brooks is telling the truth? He is a tell it how it is type of guy. First off it is a good rivalry for both teams and UK would rather play teams like J'Ville St and FCS schools than UofL. I know that all schools do this but when the rival team is in your own state it is ridiculous. I am sure UK basketball fans would have all kind of harsh words if UofL dropped UK from the basketball schedule. It's that UK football has become irrelevant and they are looking to save face and make a bowl game by playing these FCS schools. Good luck with that!!

November 7, 201114 yr I would think it would be a thought to UL as well. Obviously, that's what I was thinking. With both schools changing conferences, and possibly adding conference games, it seems possible that both would consider axing the Bluegrass Bowl.
November 7, 201114 yr The only way UL wants out of the game is if Kragthorpe was to come back to be the head coach. Other than that it is a great game for both fan base and in state recruiting.
November 7, 201114 yr Looks like this has been an academic discussion. SEC says they will stay with an 8-game SEC schedule.
