The “our blacks” comment is out of touch. It’s the sort of thing that was part of the vernacular in the era of segregation. You don’t hear people say “our blacks in Kentucky are so much better than the ones in Ohio.” She may not have meant it maliciously (then again, it is Ann Coulter we are talking about), but it is obtuse.

 

However, her saying that racism does not exist unless you are a conservative isn’t simply out of touch, it’s ignorant, depraved, and purposefully antagonizing. To say that race no longer plays a role in society, all the ills of the past have been cured, and the lingering effects have been stamped out requires you to live, as Clyde said, in a different world than the one I inhabit. I imagine there are some who would use sharper language than that. And why does she say this? Because she wants to score some political points. To Coulter and her ilk, race and racism don’t exist in reality; they are just another issue for partisans to divvy up sides. I shudder to think there are people who not only believe that, but want to be on her side.

 

I’m also all for giving people the benefit of the doubt. People misspeak or don’t mean to come across as they do. Mistakes happen. But, Coulter (and Limbaugh, Ingraham, etc.) have been saying these things on race for years. This wasn’t an aberration.

1866 isn't nowadays. Even 1964 and 1965 isn't nowadays. The Republican party of Lincoln isn't quite the same as the Republican party of Coulter. The Southern Democrat bloc of the middle 60s I would guess isn't quite the same either, I would speculate.

 

Take ANY demographic - conservative blacks, liberal blacks, atheist wrestlers - and there will be some members thereof who will be "impressive" (by just about anyone's standard), some that will be whatever the opposite of impressive is, and a bunch that fall somewhere within a standard deviation of the mean. Bell curve stuff.

 

It's the use of "our and their" - as opposed to "conservative and liberal; Republican and Democrat", etc. that is such a turn-off to many of us. Particulary those of us old enough to remember newsreel footage of blacks being pressure-washed by the likes of Bull Connor.

 

Either Coulter is ignorant or divisive. My money is on door #2.

Someone mentioned it earlier about Coulter, Limbaugh and I'll add Hannity and O'Reilly and FoxNews all as one. These people are all smart and well educated people and for them to believe and spout off their divisive beliefs as truths is part of the reason our country remains divided today. I feel sorry for the blacks out there who like and agree with Ann Coulter and are thumping their chests today proud of being one of Ann Coulter's impressive blacks. It is comments like hers that strike a chord with blacks such as myself which makes me wonder what kind of mentality a black republican has and how they feel about her.

 

 

I don't recall Harry Reid's comments but it's obvious he is an idiot and I would have said as much in the Harry Reid thread had I known or seen it at the time. I am glad it was brought to my attention because I will remember his comments going forward. He knew what he was saying too. He's old enough to know better. He's further proof of the obstacles Obama has had to overcome even within his own party. Harry Reid vocalized it but I am certain there are others who feel the same way.

 

My twitter timeline had some politically minded blacks speaking on Ann Coulter all day yesterday and I never caught what she said. Maybe one day race won't be the issue it still is today. Gotta have hope.

Yeah, I remember sitting at work watching tv when CNN went somewhere in rural Ky and they were interviewing people about how they felt about Obama and they pretty much where saying things like that. Talk about awkward here at work during that segment. I remember thinking that they would come to Ky for those interviews. They could have gone further south.

Let's face it - there's not a single black American conservative in a leadership position that the black community in general supports, not Condi Rice, not Clarence Thomas, not Herman Cain, not Bill Cosby - and I'm not even sure he's actually a conservative. There is not a single racial/ethnic/religious/age/sexual orientation/gender/Burger King or McDonalds group of voters in America that votes the party line more so than African Americans. George W. Bush had the most ethnically diverse cabinet in history, and by naming Rice Sec of State made her the most powerful person in the world of African ancestry, and the black community loathes both. To state that identifying yourself a conservative black is the most courageous political position in America is almost an understatement.

Sorry LN, but I think this thread has much broader reaching implications than just taking pot shots at the right. Hell, I don't know anyone on the right who claims Coulter and most on the left wouldn't associate her with anything but the most lunatic right-wingers. But the issues that Clyde and this topic bring up about race are ones I feel that are most worthy of discussion.

Replace "people and policies" with "coaches and teams" and you could be talking about the football forum. It's a definite drawback of this type of board/forum/blog (or whatever is the correct term), and I can't think of anything to move it in another direction. I suggested a couple years ago on the football forum that people using their real names would help, and I was quickly warned by the BGP regulars to thicken my skin or get off the board - which I threaten myself with every other week, but so far keep coming back.

I take no offense at you disagreeing.

 

You call it partisan. I call it topical as it just occurred. I am guilty of posting due to my utter dislike of Ann Coulter. I don't even consider this thread to be a political issue. I posted it as a reference to sheer ignorance in the area of race. I'll challenge anyone on any side to support her argument about "better" and her use of "our blacks." That was the purpose of the thread as I originally stated. As often happens the thread takes a life of its own.

This would hold more weight with me if it was posted on one of the many threads bashing Obama. But then again, you'd be in that thread bashing Obama. Everybody isn't a Highlands fan or a conservative and they actually have different views from you and we pay our money to express those views within the rules. Period. We've had this discussion before about football and the tone of the board and whatnot. I'd like to see you stick around but the board appears to have evolved to this tone. It's not for everyone and definitely not for those who don't have thick skin or can't handle their emotions. To each his own.
