October 27, 201114 yr Sorry, guys ... a .500 record in one of the nation's power conferences doesn't constitute "rock bottom." It does at Kentucky.
October 27, 201114 yr It does at Kentucky. No, "rock bottom" is much closer to what Kentucky went through in the NCAA investigation that put them on probation the last two years. This is just hyperbole run amok.

I agree 100% that the probation years were much closer to rock bottom than what Cal took over. Having said that, I don't believe any other coach could have turned the UK ship around as quickly as Cal. Just like I don't think anyone could have turned it around as quickly as Rick did in 1990. "Rock bottom" is too strong, but if Clyde stays another year then perhaps that would have been an appropriate phrase to use. Not only would he have lost Meeks, but also Patterson. And I believe Miller was also planning to leave the school if Clyde was around for another year.

To add to that, UK or any other team, is a good coach away from changing an entire program with a few secured recruits. Cal was able to do that. A stale coach and a bad hire which does not reduce scholarships does not place you in the pits.
October 27, 201114 yr When Mark Coury is in the starting lineup you are closing in on rock bottom.
October 27, 201114 yr Coach Cal brings in too much money to UK and the program for them to ever get rid of him. As someone else stated, I think he is there until he wants to leave regardless of the number of championships. As long as he continues to bring in these stud players and the revenue that he does, UK has no reason to get rid of him. As a fan I would like to see championships, but sometimes money matters more.
October 28, 201114 yr Life support? Come on ... Missing the NCAA tournament for one season doesn't put any program on life support, much less the one at Kentucky. Calipari turned it around, but it's not like he inherited a program at the bottom of the SEC or anything. There's no reason you should miss the tournament when your Kentucky, no reason at all. Add to that the following year you were looking at losing Meeks, Patterson, Liggins, and even possibly Miller all the while replacing them with such studs as Konnor Tucker, GJ Vilarino, Jon Hood, and Daniel Orton. I would say the program was on life support, def did not look like a Kentucky team should look. Another year or two under Gillespie and they would have been crashed and burnt.
October 28, 201114 yr When Mark Coury is in the starting lineup you are closing in on rock bottom. :thumb: Let's take that years five and this years. Then Michael Porter Jodie Meeks Darius Miller Patrick Patterson Mark Coury Perry Stevenson Ramon Harris Now Marquis Teague Doron Lamb Miller/Gilchrist Terrence Jones Anthony Davis Wilter Miller/Lamb/Gilchrist Meeks and Pat were good, Billy G was lucky enough that Tubby did the work on both of them but just top to bottom it is ridiculous to see the talent on the floor then as compared to now.
