Robert Downey Jr.: Time to forgive Mel Gibson

Featured Replies

I own Edge of Darkness....Probably the biggest drunken regret I have was the wasting of $15 on that one. Would've been better spend flushing a $20 down the toilet. Much more enjoyable than the film.

Sucks for you...I got it for $5.

I love war movies that are made well.

UKMF doesn't seem to think so, but I thought it was a very solid war movie and would encourage you to check it out.

I agree on the Passion and the Patriot...Torture sounds more appealing than sitting through those again.

Hated We Were Soldiers, and struggled to make it through any of the Lethal Weapon movies after #1. Max Max was ehh. Conspiracy Theory was another dud.

I actually would have to say Pochahontus was one of Mel's best 3-4 films, which is not a compliment.

Could it be you just dislike Gibson?

Probably my favorite Gibson movie. I'm pretty much in your camp MJ, I have enjoyed most of Gibson's movies. Exceptions would be the 4th Lethal Weapon and the 3rd Mad Max (probably the worst movie he made) and a few others.
You did leave off a Mel Gibson movie I actually didn't mind though:

What Women Want

What you said here warrants the man card being revoked.

I actually forgot about The Patriot. Unlike you & UKMF, I thoroughly enjoyed that film.

I thought he did an extremely good job playing the part of Lt. Col. Hal Moore. I like We Were Soldiers a lot. If you read the book though you would find out that in the movie you only got half of the story of what went on during those 3 or 4 days.

Could it be you just dislike Gibson?

I have no opinion on actors and/or actresses other than their movies and acting abilities (or their looks with regards to actresses :D). I could care less what any of them think about anything. I just know Mel Gibson has failed miserably in his attempt to entertain me.

I haven't read the book. Could you tell me the title and author and I will put it on my list?

I would imagine you only got half because like most books, the movie would have been way to long to fit it all in. Definitely one of my favorite war movies though.

 I actually have much more grievous "man card" offenses in my movie lis than that.

At a certain point, doesn't it go from "being a mistake" to just "who that person is"?

Yeah, sure. But people change. Just ask Mike Tyson who use to rape, beat old women and take their purses. Hollywood seems to of forgave him.

Also, Gibson is making a movie about a Jewish hero in the 2nd Century.

Maccabee was a Judean priest in the 2nd century who led a small revolt of Jews against the Seleucids (Greek-Syrian armies) and liberated Jerusalem. He is the warrior whose ancient victory is celebrated by Hanukkah.

I meant as an actor or director. Nothing more or less.

I guess the film industry consider the following to be some of his best works.

Mad Max

Tim

Gallipoli

Road Warrior

The Year of Living Dangerously

The Bounty

Lethal Weapon(s)

Hamlet

Braveheart

Signs.

I haven't seen most of the movies listed.

I thoroughly enjoyed 'Signs'. M.Night-whatever the rest his name is- best movie.

That is a favorite of mine, too, minus the whole flaw of the alien premise.

In fairness, most movies are like that. Whether lighthearted comedies or war stories. I thought We Were Soldiers did an excellent job putting a solid adaptation of the book on film, though.

As to Mel Gibson, I don't know what his deal is, but I absolutely respect him as both an actor and a director. I thought that Passion was spectacular....extraordinarily dificult to watch, but not because of the acting or the directing or the script. I like that Gibson can be either funny or serious. It's unfortunate that he has said the things he's said. I don't know what to think of those. On the one hand, it seems as if he belives those things. On the other, he does movies featuring the very biases he exhibits. Maybe he's a tortured soul. (And yes...I do believe that people can have tortured souls)
