October 18, 201114 yr Author Young was a running qb. Young ran 722 times for 4239 times for 43 touchdowns and 5.9 yards a carry. He played 13 years. Same as McNabb and McNabb won't come close to Young's rushing stats. Dare I say the only qb you will find with stats close to or better than Young's are probably Mike Vick and only Vick. I'd love to know the qb who has more rushing tds than Young. Vick only has 32 so far and has played 9 seasons. How can Young not be a running qb? Because he was primarily a passer and was capable of (and did a majority of the time) winning games from the pocket. He was a scrambler. Vick is TERRIBLE in the pocket. He looks to run before pass. Big difference.

He looks to run before pass. Big difference. The only differences is that Young is a more polished passer than Vick. Young was also throwing to better receivers. Young ran just a hair less than Vick does. Especially now that Vick is throwing 40 times a game with Andy Reid. Even Vick may not surpass Young's td record. You call him a scrambler, I'll call Young a runner. He was recruited to run the option by schools in college, some wanted to turn him into a DB at one point. He worked on his pocket presence a lot harder than Vick ever has, but Young did run a lot and always will be a runner, IMO. Just because he had tremendous success throwing the ball does mean he wasn't a runner. He was the best running qb of all time when he played until Vick came along. Cam may pass him one day. For now that's it though. You won't find many better running qbs. Young was also the leading rusher in his Super Bowl victory. Running qbs can win at high level.
October 18, 201114 yr Author ^Let's not get carried away, Young is 1000x the QB Vick is, was, or ever will be.

How can Young not be a running qb?I took Vick's first 8 years and Young's best 8 years (rushing stats) and it's not really all that close other than TD's. Vick has 653 atts, 4630 yds, 32 tds Young has 515 atts, 3091 yds, 35 tds For fun McNabb has 472 atts, 2907 yds, 23 tds
October 18, 201114 yr I would take QB A based on those stats because of the INT's. Turnovers are the most important stats in football. I actually thought Dalton had thrown fewer than 5 INT's. Regardless, take the QB with half as many INT's. Second of all, TD's vs INT's is a good stat to measure a QB by and Dalton wins that stat. What about Cam's 6 rushing TD's? I don't think it is being fair to judge compare these two guys using only the passing stats. If you combine their stats and come up with a TD/TO ratio, Dalton's is 8/5 vs. Newton's 13/9. Much closer than just the passing numbers. I also think it's worth noting that the two guys are in different situations. The Bengals have been very conservative offensively, while the Panthers have essentially turned Cam loose from the word go. Newton has attempted 40 more passes through 6 games. Compare the difference in team performance from one year ago... Carolina - 2010 vs. 2011 Total YPG - 258.4 (32) vs. 418.2 (5) Passing YPG - 143.1 (32) vs. 297.3 (5) Rushing YPG - 115.4 (13) vs. 120.8 (13) Pts/Game - 12.3 (32) vs. 22.2 (18) Cincinnati - 2010 vs. 2011 Total YPG - 330.6 (20) vs. 326.5 (22) Passing YPG - 235.4 (13) vs. 221.2 (22) Rushing YPG - 95.1 (27) vs. 105.3 (19) Pts/Game - 20.1 (22) vs. 22.8 (16)
October 18, 201114 yr ^ How many of those have game at the end of games in blowouts? Dalton hasn't really had much of a chance to pad any of his stats like Cam has.
October 18, 201114 yr ^Let's not get carried away, Young is 1000x the QB Vick is, was, or ever will be. I'm not. Just saying that Young has to he considered a running qb. If he isn't then who is. Young is one of my favorite qbs of all time. Probably #2 or #3 on my personal list of favorite qbs. A lot of that reason is because he was such a great running qb. I am one of the ones who would take Young before Montana. Young is 10,000 times the qb Vick is, was or ever will be.

I said Young was the greatest running qb until Vick came along. Vick has played 9 seasons and has 5002 yards and 32 tds and averages 7.something yards/carry......Young played 13 seasons and had 4239 yards, 43 tds and averaged 5.something yards/carry. I posted that already. Who else comes close to Young's numbers?

October 18, 201114 yr PP92, I think you are making our point for us that running QB's don't win at a high level in the NFL. Yes, there are exceptions to the rule but it is reality.
October 18, 201114 yr PP92, I think you are making our point for us that running QB's don't win at a high level in the NFL. Yes, there are exceptions to the rule but it is reality. There aren't that many playing. Look at all of the traditional qbs that can't win at a high level. That number is tremendously larger than running qbs who have failed because there are so many more. Moon never played in a Super Bowl....McNabb has. McNair has. Even Vick made it to the conference finals and Moon never did. Marino played in one Super Bowl. Young won the Super Bowl. What constitutes winning at a level? What is Mike Vick's career winning percentage? Out of the few running qbs who started for a prolonged period of time who never won consistently? It doesn't matter if they are a running qb or not. Either you are are talented enough to lead an NFL team or you aren't. Not to mention, what kind of OC did the running qbs have? What kind of defense did running qbs have? Randall Cunningham is another who comes to mind who had success as a running qb. I remember Fran Tarkenton's name but know little of him. What kind of career did he have? Was he on great teams and was he the reason his team couldn't win? Running qbs can win and win at a high level. How good would Atlanta have been if Roddy White wouldn't have waited until Vick went to jail to become a great receiver? He was Mr. Dropsy when Vick was there. Just so many different variables that make a difference when it comes to the running qb/pocket passer qb debate but to say a running qb can't win at a high level is still an unproven statement to me.
