October 14, 201114 yr The Boston media is about as bad as the New York media when it comes to looking for scapegoats. Bottom line ... the Red Sox were one of the best teams in baseball for five of the six months of the season, winning 90 games despite going 7-22 in September. Funny that none of these alleged clubhouse issues were being raised then. The Red Sox problems were on the field, not in the clubhouse. Crawford, Lackey and Drew were $43 million poorly spent this season. Buchholz and Matsuzaka made only 21 starts between them because of injuries and the rest of the staff imploded after having to shoulder more of the workload. Youkilis missed much of the second half of the season, taking another solid bat out of the lineup. If any of the first five guys mentioned there have their normal year, the Red Sox may still be playing. And still, in spite of all that, they were one or two more wins away from being in the playoffs. That doesn't strike me as a team with serious problems, other than some injuries and aging players. The Red Sox will have some money to spend this winter with Ortiz and Drew are off the books. If they spent it wisely, they'll be right back in the hunt.
