October 6, 201115 yr I find it hysterical that Soros is offered up by GOP True Believers as Exhibit A of the nefarious influence of money in politics, especially as a counter to the nefarious influence of corporate donations to the GOP. Is that the best you guys have? Really? So, George Soros is capable of outspending the rest of the Fortune 500? I think we all know the truthful answer to that question. It's why Mitch "Money Is Speech" McConnell was so gleeful about stripping away any and all restrictions upon corporate campaign donations. Frankly, Soros has been demonized to the point that his influence in Democratic Party politics is a negative unless you're a hardcore extreme lefty, and those people wouldn't be swayed anyway. It's not like Independents care what his pet causes are.
October 6, 201115 yr Author off course you do...... Thanks for your deep insight, but I'm registered Independent and refused to vote in the last presidential election because of the lack of decent candidates. But please, do you have any real insight on my post? Or do you believe the corporate influence on American politics is a good thing? Or that Soros somehow balances out the corporate influence, despite how unlikely it is that one man can stem the tide of thousands of corporations?
October 6, 201115 yr Ok Jim, I'll play. Since you're looking for deep insight why don't you start? Please tell me the breakdown of corporate donations to republicans vs democrats. Then give me the breakdown for unions. While you're at it why don't you look up the largest political contributions, who gave them and who they gave them to? I'll wait to be enlightened. Soros is just another large player, same as Rove.

Soros is just another large player, same as Rove. But for every Soros, there are hundreds of Rove-type donors. I already started with the fact that corporations overwhelmingly support the GOP v. Democrats. I'm kind of surprised that this is something you would contest. If it wasn't true, why then is the GOP the party of big business and the obvious choice for those in the private sector? But if you think it is otherwise, why don't you supply that data to refute my suggestions? It is public record, after all. Unions are a dying breed, and therefore a lame suggestion as a counter. Their influence on American politics is shrinking by the day thanks to the union-busting tactics of the GOP. If big corporations didn't overwhelmingly support the GOP, Mitch wouldn't have pushed so hard for stripping away the corporate campaign donations limitations, since he's more concerned about the welfare of the GOP than the betterment of the USA.

I have been researching Obamas biggest donors and one of the biggest-if not the biggest- donors came from Wall Street. Obama took more money from Wall Street in campaign contributions than anyone else in history. His 3 biggest top-corporate donors to him were JPMorgan, Citigroup and Goldman Sachs. Others include Lehman Brothers, Morgan Stanley, Bank of America, Merrill Lynch and Credit Suisse Group.
October 6, 201115 yr George Soros is comfortable with profiteering from the upswing of collapsed economy. It is literally in his background. He has been instrumental in taking down currencies and economies of other nations and then profiting from the aftermath. It is what he does. It is an environment he is confortable with. He gets help from the anti-American anarchy crowd - like the murderous Weather Underground members - like Bill Ayers. Hedge funds - funds that leverage in investing in unusual events are his dream. http://www.zerohedge.com/news/soros-return-1-bilion-capital-external-investors-avoid-registering-his-25-billion-hedge-fund Read some of the comments - they are interesting. Soros is not good for America. And there is only one American politician who ever took his money....
October 6, 201115 yr Author Please don't read my thread as support for George Soros. I think he's scum. However, I think the corporate influence upon American politics is perhaps more damaging.

October 6, 201115 yr So are a lot of corporations, especially those shipping jobs overseas. You will not get an argument from me on that. Michael Crichton wrote a great book on this title "Airframe". It was high tech mystery. But in the end the issue was - a mythical airplane company based in Washington state had decided to do something that is never done - they outsourced 'the wing' overseas. I think corporate America should ask itself - have we gone to far. Have we outsourced 'the wing' as it is the most critical thing. The answer may be scary.

October 6, 201115 yr So are a lot of corporations, especially those shipping jobs overseas. Like Obama's "Jobs Czar" & GE main man Jeffrey Immelt. Sorry, just had to get that one in. I realize you're not making a point in support of Soros, and I tend to agree with your conclusions regarding political contributions from corporations. I remember seeing a statistic from the 2000 election & the contributions made by big oil. They basically dumped $1 billion into the coffers of candidates throughout the country. If memory serves me right, 60% went to GOPers, while 40% went to Dems. I guess you could call that hedging your bets.

As you can see, a lot of these corporations play both sides of the fence.

Obviously the GOP isn't the only party of big corporations. Dems need/want it just as badly.
