Class Swapping Idea for KHSAA

Featured Replies

Every 2A district from 2007-10 has four teams except District 1, which was five teams (Purchase area schools; wouldn't have included Russellville). If we look at their two "play-up" options, here are the distances:

2A District (average 55.75 miles)

-Fort Campbell - 43 miles

-Hancock County - 88 miles

-Owensboro Catholic - 77 miles

-Todd County Central - 15 miles

3A District (average 64.25 miles)

-Adair County - 101 miles

-Butler County - 30 miles

-Edmonson County - 51 miles

-Hart County - 75 miles

Two of the three shortest trips would have been in 2A. Both districts had one really long trip. And the average works out to about 10 miles less per trip going to 2A. But the talent in 2A was much better. Fort Campbell was dominant and Owensboro Catholic is always good. The 3A pool was a bunch of no-names, with Edmonson County having a couple decent teams 10 years ago. I still stand by the fact that Russellville wanted to move up for geographical reasons and requested 3A instead of 2A because they knew they could compete better.

I say all this, not as a knock on Russellville (who proved themselves quite capably in 3A) but to prove the point that geography is not always the only basis. Teams can hide behind the veil of geography, but I'd wager the majority of requests have more to do with competition than anything else.

Where was McLean Co at that time?

McLean played up from 2A to 3A and were in a district with Tilghman, Union, Webster, and Muhlenberg South (prior to their consolidation and closing).

I thought in the original 6 class system Beechwood (and others) could have asked to move up. They chose not too because their stand was there was not a need for 6 classes. The current version of the 6 class system does not allow for moving up as I understand it. Should Beechwood move up? Its not like they have won every championship since the change.

McLean County was in 3A, with Paducah Tilghman, Union County, Muhlenberg South and Webster County. I believe McLean played up at the time.
I assure you, Mayfield would much rather play in 2a than 1a. Theres been no reason to suggest it, because it's not an option in the current format. Plus, in 1995, when they 1st went to 1a, it was a much more competitve class. Until 2010, when they limited it to the smallest 32 teams, 1a was okay. During a big portion of those years, teams like NCC, Danville, LCA, Cov Holy Cross, Middlesboro and a couple of others were also in 1a. With the loss of several good teams, it's not near as competitive as it used to be.
You assure us? Based on whose word?

Mayfield never asked to move back up to 2A before the six-class format was instituted, and didn't again in 2006, so why would they decide to move up now?

In 1995, Mayfields 1st year in 1a, there were 50+ teams playing in 1a and only 4 classes. Why would they? 1a had Harrodsburg, NCC, Danville, Murray, Middlesboro, Beechwood and several other strong teams in it. It was a very competitive class and that was fine. Same thing in 2006. There were still only 4 classes and 1a was alot better than it is since the 6 class system went into effect. When the 6 class system came about, it initially wasn't limited to the lowest 32, like it is now. Plus, there had to be geographic hardship proven to get moved. Also teams weren't allowed to move down. Was Mayfield in a geographic hardship when there district had the 2 Fulton teams, Ballard and Crittenden in it, all teams within 50 miles, 3 of the 4 within 20-25? again, would have been a wasted effort to even try. Last year, when they even watered it down more by only allowing the smallest 32 schools is when the real thought of moving up came about. They're currently #32 of the 32 teams in it, so, hopefully there enrollment will increase enough these next couple of years that they'll have that chance to move up. I can tell you for fact, that many of the cardinal fanbase would love to see them in 2a again. I can't speak for Coach Morris or the rest of the staff, but, you earlier said you had not heard anyone in or out of the program ever mention moving up and all I can say is you havent been listening because I hear it from people at nearly every game I go to. We're just fans so maybe we dont count, but, the discussion about it is pretty onesided in the conversations I've had and that is they would much prefer to be in 2a.

It only matters if someone in an official capacity in Mayfield's program considers moving up ... and no one in that capacity has uttered a peep about it. I suspect a lot of Mayfield fans, and those in charge of the program, like winning Class A state titles too much to move up.

If Mayfield had an interest in moving up, they could have easily asked to do so in 2006, but they didn't.

I don't think Mayfield, Beechwood or any other school in their situation had the option to move up. There had to be a hardship for a school to be allowed to move up. They were in districts with enough local teams so no choice. I have no doubt both would love to be in 2A but they don't get to make that choice.

There was no indication that either program even inquired about the possibility.

What is the evidence that the coaches and administrators at the schools named would want to move up? I'm not talking about fans. I'm talking about the people that matter.

The rules are the rules. When the rules say the only exception is for hardship, why would you ask? And how do you know someone didn't call and ask? What is the point you are trying to make? I think the point is that you don't believe any schools in lower classes would ask to move up. Is that it?

Just curious??? Could teams such as Pendleton County who have been faced with playing Holmes, CovCath, and Highlands back-to-back declare themselves independents and play competitive football games instead of being drubbed in games which provide no benefit to either team?

OR would declaring independent bar them from returning to district play in the short-term?

You can drop out of district and participate as an independent. That used to happen quite frequently. The KHSAA has a rule in now, I believe, that if you drop out of district you aren't eligible to return until the next classification cycle, which could be up to four years. This was more common when they did it every two years.

Like I said, at the time, there were 4 classes and alot more teams in 1a and it was a very competitive class and that is where they needed to be. In addition, at the time, Mayfields #s were on a decline and so was the football program.. Asking in 2006 would have been rejected anyway. What would there case have been for the move?

I'd think Highlands and Cov Cath may be 2 teams that would ask to move back up to 5a, but, maybe not.

Probably not

No, I didn't make a blanket statement about every program. I'm simply referring to Mayfield and Beechwood ... from all indications, neither has ever expressed a desire to "play up" in the last 15 years.
