September 30, 201114 yr If Alonso is good enough to start in LF he plays all of the time until he proves over a long stretch that he can't do it. No need to platoon there.
September 30, 201114 yr Slim to none chance Votto gets traded in the off season, but that doesn't mean I would be opposed to doing so. Alonso hits the cover off of the ball, I think they need to find a way to get him in the lineup.
September 30, 201114 yr Isn't Leake clearly their second best pitcher headed into next season? If you get a good offer for Votto you take it. They can't afford to pay anyone $17M which is what he's owed in 2013. He has the most trade value this winter.

The fact that he was finally able to get through the 6th inning in a couple of games was a nice hurdle for him to cross in his development. So maybe we say Cueto, Arroyo, Leake, Chapman and then Volquez and Bailey and maybe Wood battle it out for the last slot. If I were Walt though, I would be looking for a deal to land a clear #2 if not #1 starter to put at the front of the rotation. If you have to include one of the current starters besides Cueto or Chapman in the deal, then I would do it. I think a front of the rotation starter is a top priority this off season. I wouldn't want to roll the dice again next year with the current starters and watch it fall apart again like it did this year.

If they could land a legit Ace or really high 2 I would more than likely make a deal. If not I'd go with the depth they have and hope they can beat up on the bad teams again like they did last year. I'm thinkig Leak will improve again and Arroyo will hopefully rebound if he can start the season healthy. At some point you hope Volquez can figure it out. I think finding another third baseman, short stop or left fielder would be easier than getting an ace on the trade market.
September 30, 201114 yr It wouldn't surprise me to see Votto traded for Bautista and someone else. They also have a surplus of 4-5 rotation pitchers so you could trade a couple of them with Stubbs and maybe someone else for a top of the line pitcher. The Reds simply strike out too much and some of those strike outs need to go and Bruce is signed to a good deal. The Red's and the Blue Jays seem to be 2 teams that are willing to talk to each other. I think that they should try to pry Bautista and Ricky Romero from the Blue Jays and offer a good enough package that the Jay's couldn't resist. We all know about Bautista and what he would bring, a guy who could play left or 3rd if Francisco doesn't pan out and Romero would give them a solid #1 from the left side to go with Cueto from the right. It would take a lot to get them because both are signed through 2015 and both are very affordable to the Jays especially Romero. I would guess Votto and a trio of pitchers, maybe Bailey and Wood and a reliever.

But the Reds do have enough pieces to make a good offer. If there is one of the lower rung teams that need a lot and have a top shelf starter, then you might be able to trade multiple players and get the deal done. I can't think of a bad team with a top starter though.
