600 saves. How about that stat? Only one other person has hit that number. Rivera will be the all time saves leader in a few games. Jeter will never be the all time hits leader.

How many batters does Rivera face yearly?

All time hits leader doesn't get you in the Hall of Fame.

Rivera was a critical piece of the Yankees first title even as the setup man for (Wetteland, I think).

He has been the best closer in baseball for 15 years and counting since he stepped into that role. The regular season numbers are great. But, again, I think it is the post-season that puts him over the top.

94 Career Post-season games

8-1, 0.77 WHIP, 0.71 ERA, 109 K, 21 BB, 42 Saves, 3 Blown Saves (all in the the D'Backs World Series)

That D'Backs series is the only significant failure of his career. And, of course, I didn't see any of it because as usual, I thought the Yanks with a lead going into the 9th was a done deal.

You can't go wrong with either. Flip a coin and you could make a legit argument for whatever side it lands on. They both should be unanimous first ballot HOF imo.

:D

Good point. If it were Jeter/Mariano/Rose....one HOF vote...pick one...I'd pick Rose. It's long overdue. Long overdue.

His post season numbers are nuts. He's given up 2 homers in 139 post season innings pitched if I am not mistaken.

I agree.

Mariano and it's not even close. You can get another Jeter. Especially the Yankees. You can't get another Mariano. You must have great pitching to win a World Series. You must especially have a great closer. I have never heard a team say we must have a great shortstop to win the World Series. Point being.....I believe the Yanks still win all of their 'Jeter-led' rings without Jeter but not without Mariano.

I respect your opinion but as for the bolded I really disagree. D. Jeter is not only a leader on the field but he is the leader in that clubhouse and off the field as well. That, imo cannot be overstated. To say that the Yankees can get another shortstop, yes. Get another Derek Jeter....not a chance. Jeter holds that team and those egos together, that cannot be measured. Another Jeter.....no way.

Gambling will assure that you're not in. Bottom line.

I know what you are saying. P. Rose is an all time great and a favorite of mine. I would love to see Rose in the HOF as well but when you get right down to it, he broke the one rock solid rule of baseball, lied about it and was so arrogant that he thought he was above anything. Pete Rose only has himself to blame.

I hear you in terms of his clubhouse presence. Some guys have it and some don't and that is not easily replaced. I agree. I will add that for the last 15 years the Yanks have known that if they get to the 8th/9th inning with a lead...the game is likely over and done. IMO, that is just as important mentally as Jeter stroking ARod's ego or taking up for Posada to keep the chemistry in the locker room. Jeter has had an amazing career on and off the field. No doubt. He and Justin Timberlake should be the inaugural inductees in the Bachelor's Hall of Fame...word up....but I digress.....I guess saying they can get another Jeter is a stretch. Neither player is truly replaceable. They can get another productive shortstop but not necessarily another Jeter. I do think they will find a productive shortstop before they find a closer anywhere near as productive as Rivera. His dominance over 15 years is what gets Rivera my vote.

Clooney is in that class.

Now seriously...a girl's gotta work, and you work Justin Timberlake, Derek Jeter and George Clooney into the pro-sports forum????? I'm blaming you if my productivity goes down.

Clooney is in that class.

Clooney was once married.....I vote Rivera hands down. Jeter isn't even the best shortstop on his own team.

Jeter isn't even the best shortstop on his own team.

That is a good point. I have always felt ARod was a better shortstop than Jeter. Jeter also made it clear he wasn't movin to 3rd base so ARod deserves credit for swallowing his pride and ego and moving to 3rd base. Jeter is the clubhouse leader but he wasn't in that situation.

Clooney is that class also. Almost forgot about him. Clooney, Timberlake and Jeter are definitely the head of the inaugural class. Those three have done some damage. Word up. Jeter defintely beats Mariano in this category.

How many batters does Rivera face yearly?

First, let me reiterate that Rivera is sure-fire hall-of-famer and I would definitely put him in first ballot if I had a vote. But about that 600 saves... I don't like saves. Maybe it's a personal flaw but I feel like that stat has warped the use of relief pitchers in a way that I don't like. Teams should be using their best relievers at the most critical point of the game, not pushing them all the way to final inning. Let's be honest, outside the playoffs, where the pressure is different, how critical does the situation feel when coming on at the start of the final inning with no runners on base and a two-run lead? Even the way a save is defined is troublesome for establishing it as an effective measure of a pitcher's effectiveness.

In the end, it's his ERA and WHIP that I find impressive, not the total number of saves. It's impossible to look at Rivera and not see a Hall of Fame induction, but the same is true of Jeter has the advantage of playing every day and of that 3,000 hit mark that is simply one of those numbers that will instantly grab my attention that no other number in baseball does.
