The Courier's LIT ratings do get more accurate as the season progresses. They are just a statistical look at the in-state games that have been played. No "tweaking" for injured/returning players, home field, type of surface, etc. By year's end the top teams in Kentucky are pretty accurately reflected in these ratings.

 

I've always thought the same thing. They typically are very accurate at the end of the season. But we have this same complaint session for the first issue every season.

 

Also, not having Trinity ranked isn't that big of a deal. Their schedule just made it something of an anomaly. Everyone knows where they would be so just pencil them in at the top of your list.

This stems from the old "magic number" problem that plagues all computer ratings systems.

 

There is a difference between a ranking (like the AP or BGP polls) and a ratings system (like Cantrell and Lit)

 

This is not a ranking, where you place teams in an order from best to worst. There is not a person sitting down with box scores and a pencil and making cognitive decisions. It is a ratings system, based on statistical data entered into a computer and spit out. Early in the year, the magic number is assigned to each team based on factors known only to the particular ratings system, such as how they finished the previous year, historical strength, etc. You have to have a starting point. As the season wears on, the actual data from game results will outweigh the magic number you started with, and it becomes a less important factor than it is in the first few weeks of ratings.

 

Later in the season, these computer ratings are a better indicator of predicted results on the field, but this early in the year, you just can't rely on them for that use.

I get the difference between "rankings" and "ratings". However, my issue is how does BG beat X at X and still get ranked below them. This logic MUST mean that BG did not win by enough in their other 3 victories, while X's drumming of Fern Creek and Doss carried more weight. The only scenario that makes any sense for the LIT formula is margin of victory with little or no weight given to head-to-head meetings.

The LIT doesn't take into account OOS opponents, so they can't include Trinity until we play an in-state opponent.

 

I know. Just doesn't seem right to have any team not named Trinity at #1 in any rankings or ratings system. I can't look at it and respect it. Even more so after BG being rated below St. X. Can't have nothing......

Just a question. Obviously the Trinity omission is laughable, but if Henry Clay is yet to win a game, and Tates Creek beat Henry Clay at Henry Clay this past week, how can Tates Creek not be ranked ahead of Clay?

They didn't get ranked anywhere, they got rated below X based upon the data entered.

The BCS doesn’t take the number one team in the country and leave them out completely.
