Beechwood 21 Holmes 13

Featured Replies

Bjaynes summed it up pretty well. Very physical game. Holmes was more athletic and quicker (besides Volke). Both teams were very aggressive and it was a

chippy game. Holmes was kind of sleep walking early on, B'wood made a good play the player got up and got in Holmes players face and the flood gates opened. The Holmes kids then were fired up and it took the Holmes coaches all they had to keep them under control. B'wood clearly had better team, but not better

athletes. I was on the sidelines and both teams are very physical. Holmes has no offense, O-line is weak, Knox is not accurate in passing, not effective rushing. The puzzling thing was B'wood passing with rollouts and Holmes chasing the QB, he was under pressure all night. Best Holmes defense in a long while.

D-line is excellent for Holmes. This was probably an aberration for

B'wood. They won't play anyone this athletic until probably Mayfield.

I call flat out bull crap on the better athletes. Name one of the many fast receivers for Holmes that was open for anything other than a quick curl pass all night. Peterson, Scruggs, Coston ... go on list them all. Not one of them could get open deep against a Beechwood D back. Holmes had 3 first downs in the game. Offensively, Holmes may have ended up with negative yards in the game. I recall a 4th and 35, a 4th and 23, several other possessions that were longer than 4th and 10. Where were all those supposed athletes on offense? I saw Nussbaum and crew running down every offensive back and receiver with no problem. So don't throw that athlete bull out there. Yes Holmes has athletes and Beechwood had zero problem with them. I repeat - 3 first downs in the game.

So to sum up: You appear not to have been in agreement with his "athletes" statement? :D

I agree with the posters above concerning Holmes defense. They did a very nice job making Beechwood work for everything they got tonight. I was especially impressed with how they toughened up at the end of the game. Beechwood's last TD came on a 50-60 yard drive in the third quarter where they just lined up in the power I and ran it down Holmes throat to the end zone. It took about 6 or 7 plays for Beechwood to score. But with the clock running out in the fourth quarter on Beechwood's last two drives, Holmes was able to load up the line and stop the Tigers. So good job by Holmes toughening up and not allowing the Tigers to manhandle you there. Those were the only drives the Holmes defense stopped all night, but they came up big when they needed to.

The story of the game is 7 turnovers by Beechwood. If I recall correctly, all Beechwood turnovers except perhaps one were inside the Holmes 30 yard line, including the one ball dropped by the receiver/runner at the one yard line. On that play he caught a beautiful pass at the 20, was 5 yards or more behind the nearest defender and just dropped the ball as he got to the goal line. If Beechwood just turns the ball over 4 times, this game score is where most people thought it would be. As Guru said at the top, this has to be the ugliest win in Beechwood history.

Total offense for Holmes = 69 yards.

That pretty much sums it up. Athletism and speed should create some plays on their own merit with the occasional one going for big yardage. Holmes did not even come close to showing that. Beechwood was just as fast and had just as good athletes, if not better. Like others have observed......take away the turnovers and the game is a blowout with a goose egg similar to the SK game. Holmes plays with a ton of heart and enthusiasm and did not roll over but it was nice to see Beechwood overcome adversity. Adversity that they brought on themselves.

Nice to have some difference of opinions here. It really doesn't make a lot of difference on athletes it is skill. B'wood's defense is

excellent and will not give up lots of points to anyone, but Holmes clearly has tons of work to do offensively. Beechwood should

not have thrown as much as they did, the QB who throws well for the Tigers simply did not have lots of time. They needed to

grind it

out like they did near the end of the game. Holmes has to find ways to get Peterson and Clemons involved more, they are the

only offensive weapons they have. B'wood was not going to let Peterson beat them, double coverage kept him in front of them

(smart). Holmes has no QB. Hayes is a good player but not a QB. Much better game than I thought it would be. Neither of

these have nothing to be ashamed of but lots of work to do.

I attended the game last night as well. I remember Holmes being very effective in the past with a Veer offense. Agree with the statements that what they are running now is not very effective.

Holmes lost there Qb to graduation and most of offence line. They have to work on there offence but best of luck to the dawgs. Sure wish holmes could of played them last year.

If a 1A team can turn the ball over that many times and still beat a 4A team in their own house that has to be considered a good win. Maybe it was ugly but in the end what matters is the score when the clock expires. Hopefully lessons were learned and corrections will be made.
