If Lecure gets taken out of his current role you will find that out, he is too hittable. Homer's ERA is best in the first inning both this season and over his career. He gets into trouble when hitters see him a 2nd or 3rd time. As a closer he'd be able to come in and thrown hard for one inning. I think that suits him better than starting. To me he's a #4 or #5 starter, but he has the stuff to be a very good closer.

August 8, 201115 yr Be patient. Keep to the plan. This organization is building from within. We have seen this summer how valuable that is. They keep bringing up young players that have potential. Heisey, Cozart, Sappelt, Frazier, Alonso ... these guys all could help. Look at the rest of the roster ... Votto, Bruce, Stubbs, Cueto, Bailey, Chapman, Leake, Hanigan ... these are all Reds products. As the young players develop to their potential, you build depth in the organization and then if you need to to make that deal for the one player you haven't developed who can put you over the top, you have the talent to trade and make it happen. The Reds are very close to being perennial contenders so don't panic and forget the plan. Keep playing the young players. I love what the Reds have done over the past 5 years building the organization so let's not get greedy and forget the plan.

See if Todd Frazier can handle 3B the rest of this season. If he can, I hope Scott Rolen retires. (Francisco is not the answer at 3B) 3. Move Chapman to the rotation. 4. Bring back Cordero at a reduced price. Currently they have no one capable of closing except him. 5. Bring up Mesoraco tomorrow and let him catch 5 days a week to see if he's ready for next season. If he is, put Ramon thru waivers and get something in return for him. 6. See if Sappelt can hit at the major league level. If so, trade Stubbs, Alonso, Wood/Leake/Volquez, etc. for a LF'er that you can plug into the middle of the lineup. That would put the lineup something like this for next year 1. CF Sappelt 2. 2B Brandon Phillips 3. 1B Joey Votto 4. LF TBD 5. RF Jay Bruce 6. C Mesoraco 7. 3B Scott Rolen/Todd Frazier 8. SS Cozart 9. Pitcher Rotation 1. Cueto 2. Chapman 3. Arroyo 4. Bailey 5. Leake/Wood/Volquez With a very similiar bullpen they currently have.

Within the next two years, he will be the #2 or 3 starter.

Obviously they'd have to go out and add something to the bullpen if you move Chapman to the rotation. I'm notsure what's out there though. As far as 1B when Votto leaves...You have Grandal who could potentially make the switch to 1B (or Mesoraco if Grandal is a better catcher). Most people seem to think both of those young players will hit on the Major league level. Or you have Neftali Soto in AA showing a ton of power from the 1B position at 22.
August 8, 201115 yr I HATE Brandon Phillips in the 4 hole. If I were the manager I'd never put him there. He gets away from what he does best when he gets moved to the 4 hole, IMO. He is hitting .336 with runners in scoring position. I would much rather have him hitting 2nd also but he is without a doubt the Reds best option for the 4 hole unless they get a healthy Rolen back (no pun intended) or make that deal for a true cleanup hitter.
August 8, 201115 yr I have not commented much in this thread all year, but will give things a shot. - If Sappelt proves himself worthy then I plug him into Left and let him leadoff. - Stubbs is their best centerfielder and he hits either 6 or 7 in the lineup. - Bruce stays in right and bats 5,6 or 7. - Rolen stays at third and plays on a limited basis to allow you to determine if there is anyone in your system that can play their everyday. Francisco would only add to the strikeout whoas that this team already has and is not much better than EE down there. - Cozart is my man at short for now, but sample size is way to small. Would like to see them pick up a veteran for this spot. - Phillips is resigned and plugged into the 2 hole of the batting order and does not move from there. - Votto stays through next year and then look to shop him if he does not sign long term. For starters I like Cueto as my number 1, Leake as number 2, Chapman as number 3, Bailey as number 4 and Wood as number 5. I ship Volquez and Arroyo to the first teams that make me a good offer. Willis is not resigned and hope I can get something for him. Bullpen is okay, but needs to learn to not hit so many bats on the first pitch to each batter. This team is not real far away, but they need to make better contact from inning 1 to 9 and pitching location needs to be better. I am not sold on Jacoby or Pryce for that matter. Maybe a coaching change would do some of these guys good as well.

He is way more than one year behind Cueto developmentally wise. His ERA is almost the exact same as last season and about 1 full run higher than Cueto's at the same point. How do you get that he is getting better and better? He has never been either healthy and/or effective enough to pitch even 115 innings in the big leagues in a single season. Cueto has thrown at least 170 in each of his 4 seasons. Over his career Bailey has his best ERA in the first inning. The Reds have other options for their rotation. Why not see if Bailey can be an effective closer--especially if they move Chapman to the rotation? Bailey has a very straight fastball, that leads to trouble once hitters get adjusted to it, especially the 2nd time through when he loses a little bit of velocity. He throws fastballs 70% of the time while throwing a curve or slider about 12% each--which means he doesn't completely trust either of them. He would be much more effective throwing that fastball in a 1 inning situation, especially given his durability issues.
