June 27, 201115 yr With Gov Cuomo and the NY legislature passing gay marriage in NY the issue has come up again on the radio. I heard a guy on 700 today say "how will Bobby explain his 5 dads?" What? One issue that those against gay marriage often raise is the impact on a child having to explain his two dads or two moms. Is that really any worse (2 loving parents) than the kid who has to explain that he doesn't know his dad or that his mom and dad no longer love each other? From the kid's perspective how is two parents living together worse than 2 who can't stand each other and the kid shuttles between the two? If our argument is based on the kid how does one justify one vs the other?

If our argument is based on the kid how does one justify one vs the other? A child with 2 loving same sexed parents is lucky to have that support. But I also think that child may not be as accepted by his/her peers because the lifestyle is not well embraced. Humiliation, alienation, and embarrassment are highly likely, regardless of how important adults feel about those emotions. For sure, the loving same sex couple can do their best to prepare the child, but t will still happen. The child of divorced fighting couples who has been abandoned has much heartbreak to overcome. But will likely not have to deal with explanations, strange looks, etc. Because those circumstances are much more commonplace.

So are we saying that the 2-loving parents scenario is unacceptable because of ridicule? Every school has kids whose parents are ridiculed. That's as old as schools themselves.
June 27, 201115 yr Kids of mixed-race parents are now very common; a generation ago many of those kids would undergo the same looks and other issues. As with that phenomena, this too shall pass.

June 27, 201115 yr So are we saying that the 2-loving parents scenario is unacceptable because of ridicule? Every school has kids whose parents are ridiculed. That's as old as schools themselves. How did you pull out unacceptable? Never said that the 2-loving parent scenario is unacceptable. I said that the child may not be be as accepted by his/her peers because the lifestyle is not well embraced. You bet---every school has kids whose parents are ridiculed for something. IMO, kids won't tease kids from a divorced/abandoned situation as much as they would kids from same-sex parents. Never did I say that makes it unacceptable. If you reread what I wrote, I was just saying that it happens. I also agree with Jim Schue...this too will pass. But now it is still a newer phenomena.

But back to the main point (with the given that many kids are made fun of). Is that enough of a reason to say "THAT'S why same sex marriage is bad?" That's what I heard a lot today on the radio.
June 27, 201115 yr For those who are interested, in one of my Sociology classes we watched a documentary called "Daddy and Papa" that shows the lives of same sex parents who go through the adoption process. It could very well change your opinion on the matter.

June 27, 201115 yr Also, I think this goes along with Jim's comment, that the more and more gay parents there are with children in school, the more and more acceptable (for other kids/parents/teachers/etc.) it will become. I'm not sure how long it will take, but it's only a matter of time.

June 27, 201115 yr If the number of loving parents is the argument then why not have 3 or 4 loving parents and allow poligamy? I am sure that the line of what is politically correct to be tolerant of will continue to grow and grow.
June 27, 201115 yr When I was a growing up, it was scandalous to have divorced parents. In fact, I met my first friend with divorced parents when I was a freshman in high school. The argument of multiple parents is moot. There's no difference in a family of 4 dads or a set of divorced heterosexual couples who've remarried. The argument presented in the opening post assumes that gay couples all are flighty in their relationships, or even promiscuous. I think that the same can be found in many heterosexual couples. Children need loving parents. Some will be raised by a single-parent. Some will be raised by a heterosexual couple. Some will be raised by a gay couple. Some will be raised by foster parents. Some will be adopted by any of the aforementioned type parents. But the overriding issue MUST be that they are loved in any situation. God bless the gay couples who want to adopt children. God bless anyone with the means and the will to adopt children. And I hope that one of the "unintended" consequences of this legislation is that more children who are languishing in foster care are finally find loving homes.

June 28, 201115 yr Maybe the government should just get out of the 'marriage' game all together. The main function seems to be to create different tax rates based on 'marriage' status. The world does not work like an Ozzie and Harriet or Leave it to Beaver episode. 'Families' come in all sorts of configurations. While the current focus is on cerimonies where it is a pair. The question of polygamy is valid since it still openly practiced in some states and there are even popular TV shows about the practice.
