Central Hardin 21 Mercer County 2 ( 5 Innings)

Featured Replies

That's my point exactly...it's next to impossible to win with two really good pitchers - must have at least 3. The 14 run inning was just insult to injury. I'm not sure Mercer could've overcome the 7-run 2nd inning.

I agree. When it was 5-0 my wife and I were saying out loud..."it's still winnable"....then Morse hit the 2 run homer to make it 7-0 and I said...."it's over....". I am still glad I went and I am still proud of Mercer nonetheless.

You cant win a state championship with JV pitchers. Mercer had to play one game too many for their pitching. I would have loved to see Clay or Matthew pitch against Central Hardin.

State tourney record attendence. Was agreat attmosphereuntil it got totally out of hand

-Central Hardin's 21 runs tied for the most ever in a championship game. Bardstown St. Joseph beat Jenkins 21-10 at Parkway Field in Louisville in 1953.

-Central Hardin became the first fifth region school to win the state championship since Elizabethtown in 1975. Elizabethtown has won two state titles ('70 and '75), as has current fifth region school Caverna ('61 and '72).

-Mercer County became the first 12th region school to make it to the state championship since Somerset in 1981. Somerset's state title in 1974 marks the only championship win ever for a 12th region school.

When did regions realign into the current format? St. Joe Prep was a 5th Region inhabitant when it closed in 1968, but things may have been organized differently when they won it in 1953.

Until the early 70s, I think, there were only eight regions in baseball.

Single elimination in baseball is, at best, an imperfect solution. Watching the CWS setup (detailed in comparison below), you wonder if something similar would work in HS Baseball. At a minimum, I would argue for best 2 of 3 Final. (However, that would really tax pitching staffs unless there was a layoff -- which is probably not logistically viable.)

Current KHSAA System (I think) (worst record to win State would be 8-1)

* 2 from each District advance (can lose 1 game & advance)

* 1 from each Region advance (8 teams from (2 from each District) play single elimination tourney -- must win 3 games & lose 0 to advance)

* Sweet 16 at State (16 teams (1 from each Region) play single elimination tourney -- must win 4 games & lose 0 to advance)

Current CWS System (worst record to win CWS would be 10-4)

* Regional where the 64 teams that make the CWS (4 teams play double elimination at 16 locations [highest seed gets home field] -- worst record is 3-1 to advance)

* Super Regional where the 16 teams from the Regional play (2 teams play best 2 of 3 at 8 locations [highest seed gets home field] -- worst record is 2-1 to advance)

* CWS where the 8 teams from the Super Regional play (4 teams in 2 brackets play double elimination in Omaha to determine 2 finalists -- worst record is 3-1 to advance)

* CWS final where the 2 remaining teams play best 2 of 3 (worst record is 2-1 to advance)

That's not how Super Regionals work...

You are correct. Post updated to reflect accurate 2 of 3 format at 8 locations for Super Regional.

I have some videos to upload - can anyone help me with names of the kid who hit the grand slam and the kid who hit the first home run for Central Hardin?

Thanks!

Austin Walters- Grand Slam

Russ Morse-2 run home run

Here is the towering grand slam by Walters:

I noticed in the official boxscore that Mercer County only gave up 4 earned runs. When it rains it pours kind of game, first 7 were unearned and 10 of the 14 in the 4th were unearned.
