As I read the story about the game in the paper, I couldn't help but think of the Beechwood / NCC game in the regional. Meyerhoff was skewered by almost everyone who commented for leaving Bertke in the game too long. There have been a couple of posts in this thread commenting that Sullivan was left in too long but not nearly the same level. Similar situations I believe as both pitchers only needed one more out to get out of the inning and the coach hung with them hoping they would get that out. Then things get out of hand before the coach can react. You would think Schulkens would have remembered that and been prepared to respond better in this game. In fact, I would say Schulkens lack of a move was worse considering NCC's best pitcher was playing third. In the Beechwood situation, BW had their best pitcher on the mound and hung with him.

Kind of hard to disagree with this.

^ And they were playing one of the favorites to win the tournament. If ever a pitcher should have been on a short leash, that was the situation. Cain could have come in to close that one out and still had innings he could pitch the rest of the tournament if they won. At that point in the game, once the tieing run gets to the plate, you have at least consider a pitching change and when the tieing run is on base, it is time.

That HR was a no-doubter from the second it left the bat---maybe the best looking hit I've ever seen from a HS player. It was a thing of beauty, despite the fact that it all but finished NewCath's season.

 

NewCath's Frank Jacobs in 1986 hitting Newport High School (the actual building) on the fly.......WAY IMPRESSIVE.

Congrats to little ole NewCath for such a great season. Wow!!! you want to talk about a Sr class with some eye popping accomplishments. Not bad for a tiny little school atop a hill.

One thing comes to mind after reading this thread. 7 innings x 3 outs = 21 outs. Any more then that especially against a team of PRP caliper equals a not so good outcome. Defense wins championships, PERIOD. Great season Breds. Good luck PRP.

At least based on what was in the newspaper, PRP's big 5th inning was a result of two guys put on base free via walk and HBP and then 3 straight hits, not poor fielding by NCC. Not saying that defense isn't a critical part of good baseball, but if the baseball gods allowed my team to be great in only one of three areas - pitching, defense, or hitting - I'll take pitching.

Splitting hairs to me. Pitching and defense are intertwined. If a P is not confident that the 8 "behind him" are not going to catch & throw it well, they tend to try to be too fine which leads to walks. If confident, the P will work ahead, throw strikes and let them hit it. 4 errors is too many for a good defensive club like NCC. Even if PRP didn't capitalize on the Es w/ immediate runs, it increases the pitch count and increases the # of times a batter gets to see what the P has. The article even stated that once PRP had seen Sullivan a few times, they started to dial in on him.

 

Regardless, great run by the Breds. Thanks for showing well for the 9th Region.

I saw that blast in person as well. I still think the PRP shot was more impressive. Jacobs had a smooth swing indeed.

Get over it. The last I checked the pictcher is the Middle Linebacker of the defense in baseball. LOL

I hope you post is not a serious one. If it is then you have just summed up alot of things for me.

From attending both games, Bertke looked like to me at least, to be done both physically and mentally, while Sullivan looked fine! Bertke kept looking into the dugout seemingly to say I am done, while Sullivian just looked mad at himself.

 

If that 6-4 FC was a 6-4-3 DP, there would have been no question that Sullivan would have come out for the next inning and perhaps shutout PRP the rest of the way.

 

Baseball players feed off each other and that FC and not DP gave PRP that little opening and that was all the PRP team needed to come alive!
