I heard/read that the sister is catching grief for wearing white. That may be a faux pas in the States but I read that in Britain it's an old tradition that wards off evil spirits.

You are correct, Sir. It is an old belief that to protect the bride from evil spirits wishing to wreak havocc, the bridesmaids would also dress in white to confuse the spirits and protect the true bride.
