June 16, 201115 yr Right. And his implication in context was that Muslims, in general, are less loyal to America. By saying he would have anyone getting a federal job swear a loyalty oath to the US? I'm pretty certain he was using a recent events example, which just happened to be a Muslim. If he had make any references to the Islamic faith, I'd agree with you, but he didn't. If he had said, "swear on a bible", I'd agree with you, but he didn't. Would you have a problem with those getting federal jobs having to swear a loyalty oath as long as they were allowed to swear it on the "holy text" of whatever their religious preference may be?
June 16, 201115 yr Author Pretty sure about 10-15x more people died in Katrina. LA Dept of Health says it was 1,464.

In the context of a question about whether one would appoint a Muslim to their administration Gingrich's answer explaining that "we did this in dealing with the Nazis and we did this in dealing with the communists" doesn't appear particularly universal to me.
June 16, 201115 yr Pretty sure about 10-15x more people died in Katrina. I stand corrected. You are right. A life is a life. None is more important than another.

Ah, well I understand the whole thing now. If he were to do this to just a Muslim in his administration then I definitely have issue with it, otherwise I do not. Either way it will be a moot point in time because he won't win the nomination.

Well in that context, yeah I'd have a problem with it. Zoot provided us with his answer, but not the question, thus the confusion.
June 16, 201115 yr However, because of the media portrayal of the slowness and lack of decisiveness of the government toward the citizens of New Orleans-there was and is a racial side to that story ... The media was critical of Bush for New Orleans. Obama was playing golf in Ireland and didn't return for the Joplin occurance. I have no problem with Obama doing what he did rather with the media coverage of the two similar events with one costing many more lives than the other. I suspect much of the criticism of the Bush administration's response to Katrina was, like mine, that even with several days' warning that a Category 5 hurricane was about to hit New Orleans, a major city that is situated below sea level, FEMA and the rest of the federal agencies that deal with such disasters seemed slow to respond to the situation. There was no similar warning with the tornado that hit Joplin. People died in Joplin of a worse tragedy Really, how do you characterize it as worse? They're both natural disasters that caused death and destruction to so many lives and property. The media has become a huge problem in our country. No more than those that continually bash it and criticize it to attempt to make a political point.

June 24, 201115 yr Voters Not Satisfied with Current Field This seems to support my belief that Romney is really the only viable option for the Republicans in 2012. And it is a long shot IMO that Romney can win the Republican nomination. He just isn't conservative enough to win it.
June 24, 201115 yr And it is a long shot IMO that Romney can win the Republican nomination. He just isn't conservative enough to win it. If the economy is really the major concern of the voters, he should win in a landslide. Unfortunately, many (especially the "Religious Right") will say that's their main concern, then when it comes down to casting their vote, they'll vote for someone else due to Romney being a Mormon. If he does win the nomination, I expect an extremely close contest next November, and one I realistically see Romney winning.

It isn't just about Mormonism though, he has some "liberal policy" baggage that can be used against him in Republican primaries. If he could somehow win the nomination, I agree that he could win the election because that same "liberal policy" baggage could be used to his advantage to win moderate voters over in a general election.
June 24, 201115 yr My biggest issue with Romney is Romneycare. And that's a very valid concern, one I share. With the economic issues though, I feel that's something I can live with, as I don't believe he'd try to institute something like that on a nationwide scale.
