I would be curious to know Holmes shooting % on their first shot of the possession vs their % on their 2nd shot.

 

If you listened online as I did it sounded like this "Holmes drives - layup - Holmes with the offensive rebound - 2 points."

 

It sounded like they missed a lot of easy layups but as you said got the rebound and scored. Holmes players just get off the floor so quick that they beat some teams to the rebound and get easy putbacks.

The outcome of this game didn't surprise me but CCH playing man defense for most of the game certainly did. In the 2 meetings this year Holmes proved that CCH was unable to guard them man-to-man and Holmes exploted it. Holmes won't be so lucky as to face man-to-man defenses in the regional. They will have to make some shots in order to win it. On a side note none of the other 3 district winners will want to draw CCH in the first round.

 

If Holmes plays NCC they will play man like last time. They do not come out very high to pick them up. It looks funky, but it does not allow Holmes to take them off the dribble at the arc. When Holmes did penetrate, Giesler blocked everything. CCH only blocked a couple of shots.

Rice and Knox were cleaning up the misses. Thelen was always running to the other end for the fast break. He scored 8 - 10 points doing that. He was guarding Rice oin the high post and would take off while Rice went to the glass. Holmes defense on Baker was exceptional, he was not a factor. Thelen did score a bunch, though.

Covcath came out smoking and took a 10-4 lead but would trade baskets with the Dogs over the next few minutes until sophomore BJ Coston would close out the quarter with a personal 5-0 run to cut the CCH lead to 14-13 at the end of one.

 

Second quarter, BJ Coston capped off a personal 8-0 run to give the Dogs a 16-14 lead and they'd never trail again. Colonels tied the game at 16 with 2 free throws, but buckets by Hayes, Gray, and Englemon would give the Dogs a 22-16 lead. Covcath would respond with a 4-0 run to make it a 22-20 game but a HUGE two hand tip back dunk by Dontel Rice, IN TRAFFIC over several CCH defenders would really get the Dogs going and key a 6-0 run to end the quarter and send Holmes in to the half up 28-20. The CCH student section was even impressed with Rice tip back dunk over the CCH front line and responded with a "That was nice" chant.

 

Third quarter the Colonels again came out smoking, pounding the ball inside to Thelen to key a 8-0 run and tie the game at 28 a piece. Both teams traded buckets until a Hayes 3 and Gray lay in would give Holmes a 37-32 lead with 3:17 left in the third quarter. Colonels got a bucket to make it 37-34, but ANOTHER trey by Chris Hayes would extend the lead back to 6 at 40-34. Covcath got a trey at the other end but Holmes closed the quarter out on a 5-0 run, capped off by a Gray lay in as time expired to send the Dogs in to the 4th up 8 at 45-37.

 

Fourth quarter Covcath came out on an 8-3 run to make it a 3 point game at 48-45, but a Gray lay in, and then ANOTHER HUGE two hand tip back dunk by Dontel Rice IN TRAFFIC would put the Dogs back up 7 and really take the wind out of the Colonels sails. When it was all said and done, Holmes had went on a 9-2 run and lead 57-47 with around 2:30 to play. Covcath cut the lead to 8 at 57-49 but Hayes and Gray would score the next 5 to put Holmes on top 62-49. Covcath missed their final shot and Thelen got an uncontested lay in as time expired to give you the final of 62-51.

 

For Holmes, the two seniors Hayes and Gray weren't going to be denied. Both really stepped it up at both ends of the floor during timely possessions and helped keep Covcath from making any type of comeback. Dontel Rice played above the rim like he's been expected to all season. For those who weren't there, his two tip back dunks were absolutely nasty. Defenders around him and he rises up over three bigger guys and throws it down with authority. Knox played well down the stretch and was key in keeping "Waka" quiet tonight. His physical play at both ends really got Baker frustrated and forced the big guy to sit a lot in foul trouble. The sophomore trio of Palmer, Englemon, and Coston were outstanding tonight defensively. Englemon was extremely physical with Thelen in the paint and had him very frustrated throughout the game. Palmer drove the lane and found the open man time and time again and Coston's personal 8-0 run at the end of the first quarter and start of the second quarter gave the Dogs the momentum they needed to get going. An all around TEAM effort by the Dogs tonight at both ends of the floor.

 

For Covcath, it was the Jake Thelen show. He scored virtually at will down low when he got the ball but had to work for every bucket with Holmes being so physical with him. He also shot very well from the charity stripe. Baker chipped in maybe 8 but was relatively quiet and seemed to be bothered by Holmes more physical, athletic players. Connelley played well for the Colonels scoring in a variety of different ways, but seemed to fade off as the game wore on. Really liked his leadership and intensity though, even when Holmes made their runs.

 

In the end, it was Holmes pressure that won the game. They forced CCH in to a lot of turnovers and without looking at the numbers, I'd say the Dogs killed Covcath on the boards. Holmes had numberous second chance opportunities from simply playing hard and following their shots.

 

Looking forward to the regional tourney.

Walter and I debated that and we're not sure, at least I'm not. They will have open shots from outside and must convert to win.

On a side note, there was a great crowd for tonights' game. Exactly what you expect when you think of "Holmes-Covcath District Championship"

The 2nd quarter killed CCH. 7 turnovers and not enough touches for Thelen. It really propelled the Dogs.

 

Coston's contribution might have been a game-changer.

I thought Holmes played really well tonight.

I was very surprised to see CCH play man to man. They played it for about 90% of the game.

I thought Coston gave Holmes a big lift in the first quarter, and Gray and Hayes carried them.

The problem for Cov. Cath. was handling pressure. In the second quarter alone I think they turned it over on at least 3-4 straight possessions. They were not steals but more of just throwing the ball out of bounds.

Holmes does crash the glass, and CCH was leaking 32 out at times.

Gray in particular could not be contained and once he got into the paint, he would draw help which would leave someone for cleanup.

I though Knox had a very good game.

CCH had some success with a hi-lo look with Baker in the high post and Thelen on the block, but they could not sustain it.

CCh doesn't shoot it very well from the perimeter and Holmes was content to let certain players shoot it.

High energy game...both teams scrapped.

Again, I can't say enough what a job Coach Booher and his staff have done with this group. Injuries and defections and someone is there to step up. No Peterson...welcome to the show Chris Englemon. Englemon played pretty well for a kid with hardly any experience.

Holmes has a pretty solid underclassman core with Knox, Rice, Palmer, Coston, and Englemon. The last three all soph's.
