With no dispresect to anyone else in the 10th Region, we all knew that more than likely the title would once again come down to Clark and Mason County. We are nearing that "again" and I'm just ready to see how it plays out.

 

Next year will be the most wide open the region has been in a long time. From 1995-2001, the 10th Region championship was won by 5 different teams, I would expect we are going to have a stretch starting next year where that happens again.

All kidding aside, if the Royals have a healthy Neal all year, they go from an up/down 15-12 team to a team that is 21-6 and borderline state ranked. None of that matters now, getting that 4th straight region title is the ONLY thing that matters.

I agree, I love the players on this team, but we have seen them really struggle against the 11th Region this year. So yeah, this schedule has been plenty tough enough for the talent they have.

Back to the game. I'm sure it frustrates Coach O'Hearn more than it does me to see Mason County let teams back in the game after getting a nice lead. Coach said during the post-game radio interview that there was a stretch during the third quarter where the Royals seemed lost on defense.

 

Credit the Mustangs for hanging around and making a game of it at The Fieldhouse, where, contrary to popular belief, the Royals have fashioned a 5-5 record. Brossart always plays tough, and it's tough to get them out of their game plan.

 

I think this makes either 20 or 21 straight for Mason County over Brossart. Several of those were when the Mustangs had an exceptional team; just happened to run into the Royals when they were blessed with Lofton & company.

That was 20 straight wins for the Royals over the Mustangs.

 

The last time we beat them was in the 2000 10th Region Championship Game and haven't since, although being competitive in most of those encounters.

At the time of the victory in the 2000 10th Region game, the Mustangs held a 5-2 edge over the Royals.

Chris O'Hearn moved into second place for career wins last night with 173, bypassing Kelly Wells. Chris is still a few wins short of Allen Feldhaus's 325.

 

Mason County's all-time record was 1,129-434 (72.2%)

 

The Fieldhouse opened in January of 1965. The Royals have a record of 627-186 (77.1%) in the "Physical Education and Fine Arts Center."

 

Darius Miller, Trevor Setty , Russ Middleton, Wesley Jones, Justin Land, Ethan King, Keith Downing and Ryan Hamm aare all presently playing college basketball.

 

Chris Lofton is averaging 14ppg for the Iowa Energy of the NBA Development League. He scored 44 points in a win over Bakersfiled on January 8th.

 

Mason County won state championships in 2003 and 2008. The Royals were state runners-up in 1981 and 2004, and were state semi-finalists last season.

 

Three Mason County Playershave gone on to play the University of KEntucky - Ronniw Lyons, Deorn Feldhaus, and Darius Miller. Lofton of course, played his career at the University of Tennessee.

I believe it was mentioned before Neal's injury last year that he had some mid-major schools looking at him for football. Now who knows if he would have been offered a scholarship, but I can imagine the 2nd injury didn't help him. Nothing wrong with G-Town, stay close to home, play ball and get a great education.
