Most Playoff Wins & Appearances in KY

Featured Replies

Anyone know who has the most playoff wins and appearances? If guessing I would go with Danville, FTH, or maybe Beechwood. I looked in the KHSAA records and did not see anything on this but thought someone out there in BGP land might know

Would be great for someone to research. It would have to be clubs that were consistently in the playoffs when there was only one District team going.

Danville, for all of it's success went through some dry spells in the late 60's till Tom Duffy arrived. I recall maybe only about 3 or 4 playoff appearances for the Ads in the 70's. Two of them saw them get upset in the first game (Regional Final back then) by Shelby County. Those were some very good Danville squads led by Chris Jones.

I'll hazard a guess of the ones I think would be there: Ft Thomas, Mayfield, Trinity, St X, Beechwood.

Well, you would think the ones with the most titles would be right there in the playoff wins category. Appearances would be interesting to see. My guess is Highlands is likely number one in both because they have been consistently good since the 50's.

A tentative rundown of my records gives the appearances this order:

41 - Trinity

39 - Highlands

38 - Mayfield

37 - St. Xavier

36 - Glasgow

35 - Belfry, Corbin, Danville

34 - Ashland, Bardstown, Owensboro

33 - Paducah Tilghman, Pikeville

32 - Beechwood, Hazard, Paintsville

31 - Murray, Russellville

30 - Butler, Male, Newport Central Catholic

As for playoff wins, here is the list. (Losses are in parenthesis beside the number of wins)

115 (21) - Trinity

108 (19) - Highlands

99 (30) - Mayfield

94 (21) - Beechwood

87 (25) - St. Xavier

85 (25) - Danville

68 (30-1) - Pikeville

60 (26) - Newport Central Catholic

59 (33) - Belfry

58 (24) - Male

55 (15) - Boyle County

55 (32) - Corbin

53 (30) - Paducah Tilghman

52 (20) - Covington Catholic

50 (26) - Bowling Green

Most regional titles, a little followed number but still very interesting (regional final losses in parenthesis):

30 (7) - Mayfield

27 (2) - Beechwood

26 (4) - Trinity

22 (6) - Highlands

19 (8) - Danville

I've got Bowling Green down for 51-25. Do yours count the Hopkinsville forfeit in 1997?

Another interesting number, most losses in state semifinal games:

14 - Mayfield

13 - Pikeville

12 - Beechwood

9 - Somerset

8 - Belfry

8 - Bell County

8 - Boone County

8 - Hazard

7 - Corbin

7 - Danville

7 - Owensboro

7 - Paducah Tilghman

7 - Prestonsburg

7 - Russellville

7 - Trinity

Yes. I've never went in an rearranged forfeits. My W-L for Hopkinsville is probably higher than the official numbers, while all opponents of Hopkinsville in 1997 likely need one more victory on their total.

Teams with more than five playoff appearances without notching a victory:

12 - Jenkins

10 - Phelps

9 - Perry County Central

8 - Knott County Central

7 - Berea

7 - South Floyd

6 - Adair County

6 - North Laurel

6 - Powell County

5 - Hart County

5 - Lewis County

5 - Magoffin County

5 - Spencer County

5 - West Carter

It's interesting to me that some teams may have higher numbers and fewere appearances because of the playoff expansions.

Case Study on Boyle may reveal this.

The Rebels (if my memory is correct) only made the playoffs in '77 and '82, losing both times in their first game (the old Regional Final). Only 8 teams in total made the playoffs in '77 and only a few had sub-districts in '82. The Rebs did not win a playoff game I think until 1992 or 1994. So all 55 Post Season wins have occurred in less than 20 years.

I'm not certain but I don't recall Cov Cath doing a lot state wide until the mid 80's. I believe a team like Russell has more playoff appearances than say the Colonels but they did not win near as many games.

Great work gchs. :thumb:

gchs ... impressive! :thumb:

Do your totals include the entire history of high school football or do they start at a certain year?

They start with the institution of official state playoffs by the KHSAA in 1959.
