The lawmaker says he supports this policy to get people off of drugs. Will this really help get people off of drugs? I have my doubts.

It won't! I would only get on board if it was for hard drugs only, and it should be for everyone in the system. I still say that after a certain amount of time, if they are capable, they should be required to do some type of work, even if it's cleaning up highways or cleaning up after a high school sporting event, something, it doesn't have to be much either.

 

And this money is coming from.... where? Didn't we cut a bunch of jobs as the state doesn't have enough money?

 

Some may say this is wrong, but I say if you are on welfare you can only get benefits for a certain number of children, I would be in favor of the states paying for them to be "fixed" as a birth control. TOO many people abuse this, and there are those who have kids figuring out it's another boost in their welfare check.

I'm not sure how I feel about this, will have to give it more thought. The point TB&G brings up is my biggest concern.

 

A little off the subject, I believe anyone that receives assistance should have to work a set number of hours for the local or state government each week. The amount of time would depend on the amount of assistance.

Looks like Napier is saying that the random part of the testing would make it constitutional. Also said that since it would be random, the cost would be less than 18 MM. Wonder how many people they would test each year? Would a missed test be construed as a positive?

 

I would say so, if you are on probation or an NCAA athlete skipping the test is deemed a positive. When I worked in NCAA compliance for a semester we told all our athletes if they showed up just 1 minute late for a random test by the NCAA the NCAA would have already locked the door and marked positive on their empty sample cup.

I can't imagine you can because then the required drug test would definitely violate the constitutional rights.

Is that the reason that was given for moving to the card? I assumed that it was less costly and that it also accounted better for "change." I used to work at a grocery store as a cashier back when I was in college. I remember how this one younger 'mother' would always try to send in each of her three children with a $1 food stamp. They were each to buy a 3 cent piece of bubble gum. That way she would have enough cash to buy a pack of cigarettes. Of course, this didn't work, but she tried it on each new cashier at the store at least once.

In 2003 the Michigan courts ruled that it was unconstitutional.

I wouldn't mind sharing the drug test reports with Social Services and on top of that I would use this to prosecute the drug users for fraud. If they have moeny for drugs they are lying to the government about how much they have and their need for government assistance.

Obviously these children are not in ideal situations, but the question is legitimate. Many of these children (if not all) are too young to control their own destinies. What effect will cutting off their parents' only source of income have on them? In some cases, it may ultimately improve their situation. I don't think it'd help many children, though.
