Favorite Christian/Gospel Song?

Featured Replies

I would have put this in the P&R forum, but I thought it might get a little more attention here.

What's your favorite?

Any recommendations of songs dealing with "strength"? Hope that makes sense lol.

I always liked a little "Purple Robe".

Russ Taff & The Imperials. "Praise The Lord !" A fantastic song !

When you're up against a struggle

That shatters all your dreams

And your hope's been cruelly crushed

By Satan's manifested scheme

And you feel the urge within you

To submit to earthly fears

Don't let the faith your standing in

Seem to disappear

CHORUS:

Praise the Lord

He can work through those who praise Him

Praise the Lord

For our God inhabits praise

Praise the Lord

For the chains that seem to bind you

Serve only to remind you

That they drop powerless behind you

When you praise Him

Now Satan is a liar

And he wants to make us think

That we are paupers

When he knows himself

We're children of the King

So lift up the mighty shield of faith

For the battle must be won

We know that Jesus Christ is risen

So the works already done

I have to admit, I'm not so much for the Christian/Gospel genre as a whole, but there is a bit of it that I can do to listen to if need be. I had an old girlfriend who listened to a good deal of Contemporary Christian music. Ginny Owens - "If You Want Me To" is one that sticks out in my mind.

I've ALWAYS liked "I Shall Not Walk Alone" by Ben Harper. I use it regularly to accompany the witness talks I give on senior retreats in the diocesan high schools. The original is great, but there's a version he did in a "rockumentary" with the Blind Boys of Alabama that I often times prefer.

I'm really feeling "Who Am I?" by Casting Crowns right now.

Contemporary Christian isn't music. But there is a lot of good gospel out there but to be honest it's not something I've dug into enough to be able to have too many recommendations. I really like the Blind Boys of Alabama. Ben Harper & The Blind Boys of Alabama have an album together that is pretty good.

There is also a lot of bluegrass influenced gospel that is out there and is good. I know there is some on the Oh Brother Where Art Thou (a couple of songs done very well by Alison Krauss) soundtrack.

"I'll Fly Away"

Disagree 100%, just because you don't like it, doesn't mean that it isn't music...

It's definitely noise that pretends to be music. In 99% of cases I believe if they had the actual talent they would make more secular music or at least get played on secular stations. The "Contemporary Christian" genre is just a gimmick to get devout Christians to buy an inferior product because of it's "message".

And I'm not dissing the message---I could care less and have actually stated that I do like a lot of gospel music.
