Having seen both play, what major difference b/n Towles and Pike do college recruiters see that I don't? Pike appears to be an athlete playing quarterback, whose future is elsewhere. Towles looks like a future QB, but the system that he was in has done little to show his overall ability to make certain reads and throws. I don't see either being heads and shoulders above the other, but Towles has been lightly recruited and Pike is recruited as a top QB. Am I that bad at evaluating talent?

Pike has done a good job being in the right places in front of the right people. There is some truth that marketing now plays a role in an athletes ability to play at that next level. Not sure if Towles has been on the same circuit as Pike. Very similar measureables as far as height, weight and athletic ability. Towles does not have the textbook release that Pike has at this time.

That is very true.Bardo also had an unorthodox throwing motion. Is this something that the HHS staff will work on? Or are they like most schools(including college) who do not mess with a qbs throwing motion?

Pike is just as big, has a better throiwing motion, better feet, faster release, stronger arm, higher release point, is a textbook passer who's always up on his toes, and a list of offers that Towles will never see the likes of. Why would you even try to put the two in the same catagory? Towles is a great player and WILL get more offers, but you're setting him up for a message board beat down by trying to compare the two.

My first thought is why do some always feel the need to compare players that aren't even in the title of the thread. I for one would like to see both Pike and Towles receive offers at major D-1 schools. At this point I think the reason Pike's "offer" list is larger is that every school who has offered him may not be recruiting him solely as a QB, which is not the case with Towles, who is exclusively a QB.

 

As for the message board beat down you speak of, I'm confident that neither Towles nor Pike could care less what anyone thinks on this message board. After all, it's not as if they have their own spin doctors scanning the threads to make sure they are portrayed in a positive light.

Not a huge believer in ANY recruting ranking sites. A lot of bias, tie ins with certain HS showcase games, etc. The one thing that has really stood out to me over the last few years is that when a player commits early it tends to send them on a freefall down the recruting boards. People don't pay to look at guys who have already committed early.

 

Haven't seen Manley play yet, but Pike has all the physical tools to play big time college football.

I see Pike as a top recruit as an athlete. He has the size and the demeanor that colleges want. Is he the best QB in NKY, in my opinion , NO. I have still yet to understand how he was touted as the best QB last summer when he had not taken a snap. But , hey whatever.

 

Towles will be looked at by colleges strictly as a QB. I would think that could limit some colleges jumping on the bandwagon quickly.

 

Both will do well and get looks from some awesome schools. They will both be in the fortunate position to have choices of where they would like to continue their education and possibly play the sport they love.

I could call in tomorrow to scout or rivals and say I play quarterback for Bellevue (no offense Tigers) and I have received 34 offers this week and they would post it. They do no follow up research on any of their stats. I can guarantee you Pike is being offered as an Athlete and not as a Quarterback. You can offer 10 scholarships to different players as athletes but this can't be done at the QB position. I guess if they both attend U of L they'll share snaps on alternating series... LOL If Pike wants to play QB, I'm sure he'll have that opportunity at the next level, although his options will likely be fewer than the myriad of schools that have offered him a scholarship.

Correct. It shows the importance of getting in front of coaches in summer camps. Muschamp was quoted today as saying how much easier it is to get a feel for a kid's ability when he's right in front of you vs watching him on tape.
