Marvin has complained about this with Chad for a long time.

 

I wander if the lack of a true FB like they had last year as a lot to do with the running totals.

If I am not mistaken, they actually had a true FB on the field against Cleveland when Cedric ran for 151 yards.

Beyond the true reason of Mike Brown being the problem, it seems the Bengals deficits were twofold this year.

 

Injuries hurt the defense and lessened their effectiveness.

The Bengals with their high priced WR's went away from the strength of the team: the running game. And played to the egos rather than what the core of the offense should have been.

This is the point I made in another thread. The Bengals went away from the running game this season. Why? I have no idea but one could make the assumption that they had to throw it more to keep all of the "personalities" happy.

 

Of course maybe I'm wrong about the whole thing and the Bengals really are a better team this season.

Well statistically, overall they are a better offense this season. My point is that the D is down, and they haven't run the ball effectively. Everyone one wants to point to the last two games as some sort of barometer as to how the team"can" play. Well, for one scoring 1 TD at home against the Brown is not a great feat, and playing well against at team that had quit, isn't enough to hang our hats on, and say hey, they're really not that bad. They are.

So you don't think they knew KC had beat Tenn and moved to 10-5. Eliminating them from the playoffs? From what I gathered from some folk at the game, that actually know something about it, their opinion was SD wanted nothing to do with the cold or playing the game.

From everything I heard, the Chiefs winning is not what ended the Chargers playoff hopes. It was once the Bengals beat them that ended any hope. Didn't they still have a shot at the wildcard if they won since the Jets lost? Or didn't they still even have a chance at the division if they won and the Chiefs lost the next week? I do remember hearing these NFL people talking about how the Chargers losing is what ended their playoff hopes, not the Chiefs winning.

After looking at the standing, the Chiefs winning did not eliminate them at all. If the Chargers would have won, they still could have won the division. They just would have needed to win the next week and hope the Chiefs lost the next week. They both would have had the same record, they both would have split their two games, they both would have had the same division record. The difference would have been the Chargers would have had the better conference record, which would have been the next tiebreaker. So the Chargers did not quit they just got beat. They had everything to play for still at the time.

I don't know MC; from the little I've watched of them the Bengals seem to have the talent. I really think the Bengals demise this year was their movement away from the run. Perhaps they did so to keep the WRs happy and not causing problems; perhaps they did it because they are paying Palmer a lot of money and desperately wanted him to again be a premier passing QB in the league (from my experience with the Brown family, they tend to fall in love with certain players and do every thing they can to make those players hugely successful. Palmer would seem to be one of those type of players-a clean cut, well spoken and loyal person); and perhaps someone just misjudged the ability of the Bengals O line to pass the ball. I don't know. But I'd guess that the decline in the defense had a lot to do with the defense being on the field a lot more this year. The O may have only scored one TD against the Browns, but my guess is that the O was on the field a lot more in the Browns and Charger games than in other games and the D was on the field a lot less. That really helps the D. I'd guess (and it's just a guess since I don't follow the Bengals all that closely) that if you took the minutes the O and D were on the field in all games this year (with the exception of the last two) and compared it with the minutes last year you'd find the D was on the field a lot more this year than last. That's tough on a defense, particularly one that has been as banged up as much as the Bengals defense has been this year. If ever there was a year that the Bengals would have wanted a lot of long, ball control drives so their banged up D could stay on the sidelines, it was this one. All great idea. However when the Bengals ran the ball this year early in the game this year they were very unsuccessful unlike last year. Their average yards per carry this year was HORRIBLE, so its hard to stick with that when its not working. Its not helping your defense out either by going 3 and out. It was not the going away from the run, it was the inability to run the ball this year that went away. I mentioned this a few times, last years running game didn't make the Bengals a great team. They had to win games at the end of the games on Palmers arm to win them. So the running game kept them close in games. Which the Bengals were in basically every game this year at the end too, they just didn't win it. The difference was not them not running the ball as much, the difference was the running game not working as well, and not making plays at the end of games to win it.
