Haley Barbour Has Stepped In It

Featured Replies

Potential POTUS candidate Haley Barbour stepped in it by saying that he doesn't remember it being "that bad" in regards to civil rights in Mississippi.

As you can imagine many have a slightly different memory of the times than Mr. Barbour does.

So:

A. It really wasn't that bad for blacks in Mississippi

B. It was but Haley was sheltered and didn't know and hasn't ready any books about it

C. He's loyal to MS and wants to re-write its history

D. He was misquoted

or

E. He simply is not very smart.

I don't know him so I can't say it's E. I guess it's always possible it was D. My guess, though, it's C.

Regardless which one it is it will be mentioned a few times should he decide to throw his hat in the ring.

Before my friend HT jumps in let me say that I think MANY states STILL have racial issues so this isn't particular to MS. However, if there's one state that comes to mind when people think of the civil rights era and the problems that existed it's MS.

Maybe you just stepped in it. There are some who are bigots and practice discrimination. Yet, with your capitalized words it seems as if you think it is still the 1950's when it comes to race relations.

Are there still some who are bigots? Yes, but America has come far from that era when I was only 5-6 years old.

Some things never have to be stated because they're as obvious as the nose on one's face. However, since it's not completely obvious to all let me state: Race relations are obviously better than they were in the 50s and 60s. Better? Can we now get back to the point?

This is the guy with a Jefferson Davis signed Confederate flag displayed in his office. You wouldn't be hard pressed to find similar sentiments as this from him. Outside of Sarah Palin, he's the dream candidate of Democrats.

Any chance this wasn't a simple ill-conceived comment and, instead, was a message/political statement?

You mean the capitalized words in the title?

This reminds me of the Rand Paul civil rights controversy. He is now a Senator.

I don't agree. Rand Paul was attempting to adhere to a particular ideology on an extremely sensitive subject and his less than full ability to articulate that position made him appear crass and dim. Barbour is taking and has taken rather fantastical positions on the same subject, which makes him appear delusional or contemptible. Outside of that, Paul was running in a conservative state against a poor opponent, Barbour will have a national election to contend with.

Is your head so firmly planted in the sand that you can't see that there are still issues with race in this country? It's immaterial to this thread but I'm shocked that someone would believe that.

Don't see either one of them getting the nomination.
