Red Sox sign Carl Crawford

Featured Replies

7 Years $142 million. I had hoped this was the reason that they didn't bid too high to keep Victor Martinez. The Red Sox have a potentially devastating offense if they can avoid the injury bug that plagued them in 2009.

I love the move...how could you not?

That is a TON of money though. These FA's are getting PAID.

Will Boston still have Scutaro?

Ellsbury & Crawford could wreak havoc on the base paths.

Curious, but didn't Crawford steal 6 bases in 1 game against Boston?

He is a great fit and a good player but that is a heck of a lot of money.

Makes me laugh when people act like only the Yankees get stars. A Gonz and now Crawford. Wish the Reds could afford him but that is a lot of cash for a guy. Pretty sure he's had some hammy or some kind of leg problems too. He's a player though.

You're right.....only the AL East sign big players.

Believe a Boston fan told me he plays the field very well in Boston too. Very nice signing.

Red Sox fans are no longer allowed to complain about the Yanks.

Very good signing by them...probably means Jacoby will be on his way out.

And this is why MLB will continue to slide in small markets. The Red Sox swing and miss last year mostly because of injuries and go get two studs to fill their holes. The Reds fight and claw their way to a division title and ask their 35 year old pitcher to defer some money becuase they can't afford to pay their own young guys that they drafted and developed.

I don't necessarily agree. Both Crawford and Ellsbury can either play center or left and Crawford isn't necessarily a leadoff hitter. They could bat 1-2 in the lineup or Crawford might leadoff and Jacoby bat 9th. Ellsbury is still under the Sox control for several seasons and I don't see why they'd want to get rid of him.

With the deals of Gonzalez and Crawford, do the Red Sox stay in pursuit of Russ Martin? I hope so, not to confident in Salt as the everyday catcher.

This is disappointing. These contracts are getting ridiculous. The situation in St. Louis with Pujols is going to get ugly...

^With how crazy these signings are getting, it'll be almost impossible for St. Louis to be able to afford him unless he gives them a huge discount IMO.

Definitely a tough situation for STL. You cannot let Albert leave, especially if he's going to stay in the NL. But I don't think the Cards can be successful, with their payroll, paying Albert what he's going to demand (and likely get).

It is defiently going to get tricky. It is not calming when the team president is making remarks like "Well we are doing everything possible, it's up to Albert". I'm not sure if I read into it too much, but sounds like he is trying to get some sympathy already.

I am not as concerned with the $$ amount per year as I am with the years Albert will try for. If he settles for 5, we'll be okay, but if he asks for 7 or something I just can't see the Cardinals wanting to pay a 38 yr old 25-30 million.
