There was also a completely new staff and #1 (and much larger) recruiting class at UK, but you do have a point.

And Patrick Patterson.

Concept might be the same, but the comparison between the two clubs isn't really close.

I didn't mean it as a bash necessarily. And I'm certainly not holding any grudges. But your original comment said they were getting better every season. I understand that they weren't good when Tubby got there, but the numbers look almost exactly the same for his first three years. If they make significant improvements this season then I will gladly say he's making good strides. But as of right now, it looks like a whole lot of the same in the Twin Cities.

Well considering as I said they were just an 8 win team when they got there. Then in his first season 20 plus wins and NIT appearance, and then last two seasons they made the NCAA tournament. Also if I remember correctly they made it to the Championship of the Big 10 tournament last year, without Al Nolen who was one of their best players. As I said every year under him they have gotten better...

What I will say about Tubby is you know what you are getting. His numbers and success rate were very similar at Tulsa, Georgia, Kentucky, and now Minnesota. If you want a 22-10 record with Sweet 16 appearances then that's what you get. At a place like Minnesota that's good enough. So I guess the Gophers are improving every year.

Let's just agree to disagree on the topic, eh futurecoach...

:thumb: I couldn't agree more. If anything Tubs is consistent no matter where he coaches. I'm going out on a limb here and making a bold prediction that Minnesota will win anywhere from 20-22 games and lose anywhere from 10-13 this season as well. First or second round loss in the NCAA, but hey, they're probably tickled pink with that up there.

Lets see took over a team that had 8 wins the year before. Now he has had 3 straight 20 win seasons with them, and gotten them to the NCAA tournament two striaght years. Now might have a team that can go a little further now this year possibly. So how is that not doing a good job with them. Some of you all need to get over your little grudges about him, and just get over it. The man is a good coach, and one a title here at UK and many SEC titles. When he was an up and coming coach he did good jobs at Tulsa, and then Georgia. He does a good job wherever he goes, so some of you all need to get over it and realize he is a good coach. All I was saying was he was doing a good job, which he is. I didn't say I wish we still had him, because it worked out well for all of us. So what is the point at still trying to find ways to bash him?

Absolutely! Great post fc . I started to respond to that post and I saw your post, I couldn't had said it any better. I am happy with Coach Cal here as well. I still believe that the way that Tubby, and especially his family was treated here was an embarrassment. I hope that Tubby and Minnesota wins them all, except if they should play U.K. somewhere down the road .

All Tubby does is contribute greatly(with donations to good causes) to whatever city he is in, run a clean program, Wins and yes btw is a great basketball coach.

(btw, Coach Cal lost a regional final in the NCAA last season and I didn't hear anyone slamming him and how many NC's has he won?:sssh:) Are we going to see "fire Cal" post now??

Tubby Smith is a class act, well respected all over the country as a good man and great coach, except for "some"people in Kentucky that it kills them to see that he is still sucsessful. That same ol' :deadhorse: is still present.

This may be the year he makes a good tournament run relative to the school he's at...Sweet 16 with Tulsa? Elite 8 with Georgia? National Title at UK?

This might be the year he gets to the Sweet 16 or beyond with Minnesota. He usually does that every 4-5 years it seems.

Tubby is exactly where he needs to be--at a program with little pressure to win. The man is a good basketball coach. And I don't think anyone can deny the positive contribution he and his family make within the city they live/coach. What he has done at Minnesota he also did with Tulsa, Georgia, and for a time, at UK. His defenders should continue to defend him as a good coach & outstanding man, because he is both.

His defenders should also realize the program he inherited at UK and the program he left us with were quite different from one another.

Cal inherited an NIT team that had lost its leading scorer & yet still went to the Final 8. That's why no one says anything about falling short last year. HUGE difference.

However, if Cal goes this year & next without a Final Four appearance, the natives will get restless.

I think we've beat this poor dead horse to the underworld, but I think you'll agree that one slight difference is Tubby took over arguably the best program of the 90s coming off a national championship title and runner up, whereas Coach Cal took over a program that could barely compete in the NIT. Slight difference there, don't you think?

Facts and details have no place here.

And Cal doesn't run the mythical "clean" program.

I think style of play and star power works in Cal's favor as well. His teams are more entertaining and we get to watch NBA lotto picks on a regular basis. If he consistently has a #1 seed and doesn't make a Final Four, the natives will get restless, but not like they did with Tubby. The end result may be the same, but for me personally, I prefer the more entertaining style, the elite talent, and heading into the tournament knowing an Elite 8 will be a disappointment rather than the ceiling for the team.

But, its not my intention to knock Tubby. He's a good coach and he's doing a good job in Minnesota. I hope they do well. And, he coached us to a national title and a great 3 year run with Chuck Hayes and company. It's not like we didn't have some good times with Tubby running the show.

Agree with you on everything. They won't be screaming for Cal's head the way they (I should say "we") were w/ Tubby. And no question we had some good years w/ Tub. He won a national title, and that fact alone should earn him a banner in Rupp.
