I believe it was you who brought up the "system" issue, not me. I simply responded to it. As far as Montgomery, I have zero issue/s with this young man. Why do you have to make it personal? I am only looking at ONE thing when it comes to player skill evaluation. We just happen to disagree on the talent level, and the players who we think belong on the list. I just think there are other players who are more deserving sheerly from a talent perspective (on court performance). If he truly belonged on the list, you wouldn't have to use the "system" as a reason why he will not play to his full potential this season.

Dispite the 'system', he is still on the list. And, it seems most, if not everyone on here agrees he belongs on the list.

You are the one stating he doesn't belong on the list.

I disagree with this statement (and that ok, that's why this board exists. lol). I believe (and it's only my opinoin) that the Boone system is not condussive to his (and others) style of play. Whereas, with his AAU team, a more up and down the court and a more spreadout system (fewer number of set plays, walking the ball up the court, etc.), he shined more than in high school.

It really comes down to debating who is on the list, who is not and who should be on the list. You are saying out of the top 10 players, he is the only one that doesn't deserve to be on the list. I'm saying not only should he be, but also Trevan Brown should be as well (or should be close). I know I'm a Boone homer.

I take it personally only because it gets frustrating seeing the Boone players (Montgomery, Brown, Cotton, Popp, Gabbard, etc.), year after year, not being able to utilize their talents to the fullest on the basketball court. That's all.

Apples and oranges when trying to compare style of play in 9th region ball vs AAU ball. 9th region ball seems to pride itself on defense. It seems 9th region teams often score more when they get out of the 9th than they do in the 9th. AAU ball is made for boys that are athletic and like to shoot because they face little strategic defenses.

As I pointed out, Boone scores as much as anyone on a nightly basis. IMO they have been blessed to have a lot of scorers so the scoring is spread out so you don't see an 18 to 20 PPG player on Boone. That's usually a good thing.

I don't buy the "system" excuse. Too many facts say otherwise.

Ok, perhaps I am missing something here, in my book 'system' and 'style of play' mean the same thing. I may need a definition, word origin and can I have both used in a sentence. Only kiddng....

I guess I should say, in my opinion, Boone's 'style of play' (or system???) isn't condusive to fully utilize Boone's players talents (Montgomery, Brown, Cotton, Popp, Gabbard, etc.) for the past few years.

My definition........

AAU 'style of play' = John Calipari's 'system' >>> up and down the court, helter skelter, cutting and slashing, etc.

9th region basketball 'style of play' = Tubby Smith's 'system' >>> walk ball up the court, set offense, running plays, motion, etc.

Does that sound about right?

My point is that you're saying AAU style of play should be implemented in 9th region ball because of how well it works in AAU in the summer. However, once the high school season starts defenses are completely different (ie actually thought about and implemented) as compared to the up-and-down AAU season. Your point IMO would only be valid if 9th region teams played the same lackluster D as is played in AAU. It's not, thus, you need to come up with something to attach real defenses.

Again, the "system" that Boone runs puts up as many or more points on a consistent basis than any other top team in NKY so what's the issue?

I think we need to get back on topic.......

Who else should be on the list? Who was missed? Remember, if you add one, you have to remove one....

Out of the following schools, Boone was #2 in scoring last year.

Newport, NCC, Holmes, CCH, Conner, Ryle, Highlands, St Henry, Dixie, and Holy Cross.

So is Boone's offensive "system" really a problem? Or is it actually working?

Boone's system works great. Just look at McQueary's recent success on the court. He has done a great job with the players he was been dealt. I believe Gabbard and McFarland are both playing college ball. He has also coached some other good athletes; Cotton (baseball), Brown (football). IMO, he has done a great job with his program. He runs a very disciplined system that demands player's respect and attention to detail. I know he has had to fight lots of outside pressure since he took over and has succeeded in spite of all the outside distractions. Kudos to Coach McQueary.

The issue is that Boones 'style of play / system' doesn't utilize their players (Montgomery, Brown, Cotton, Popp, Gabbard, etc.) abilities to the fullest. Does it win games? Yes. Does it take away practice from the lay up line? Yes.

Now, I quit. I'm taking my 'style of play / system' and going home. lol.

PS - Clyde, I do agree with your assessment of AAU v. 9th region basketball in terms of 'lack of defense', etc. and needing to design offenses to attack defenses.

RE - Does he run a disciplined 'system' or 'style of play' that demands the players' respect? I'm only kidding. At the end of the day, for a coach, it's about W's and L's, and his record supports it. Now, I really quit!!

Let's get back to the Top 10 players in NKY. Just keep the Boone player on the list and we won't get off on a tangent!!!! lol.

I am going to have to disagree with your comment about lackluster defense in AAU. I think the tempo of the game changes due to the amount of high talent athletic players coupled with very limited team offensive sets. This allows for a faster tempo. I don't think high school teams play better defense. I think high school teams generaly lack the number of high caliber players.

Ding, ding, ding..... Winner, winner, Chicken Dinner!!!!!

This has been my argument for years with BCHS basketball. Their 'system' doesn't allow for athletes/basketball players to shine and show off their skills (like AAU does). That is why you see glimpes of really nice play and times of him disappearing, heck, there are long stretches of games when the WHOLE BOONE TEAM disappears.

To say Travis isn't a top 10 player in the Northen Kentucky is ridiculous!!! He's top 5, easy!!! I would throw in Trevan Brown as top 10 (or close to it). The problem is, THE BOONE SYSTEM!!!!

From reading these posts, perhaps I am incorrect, however, it is sounding like Dixie is loaded this year. We've brought up 4 players in a discussion of the top 10 players in NKY.

They must be the early favorites to run away with the region with all that talent!!!

Parents and players close to the Boone program realize this, but outsiders are skeptical. This has been a problem the last few years. The motion half-court offense does not take advantage of athletes. Travis is definitely a top 10 player in NKY. There have been several years of frustrated parents and players.

System allowed Boone to come within a missed layup of upsetting eventual state champion Holmes and making a trip to Rupp a couple of years ago. Has allowed Boone to win a lot of games over past couple of years.

Travis is a top 10 player in Northern Kentucky but I would have a hard time saying he is top 5 based on production at this time. A also wouldn't have Tyler Hodges ranked 2nd for the very same reason. Production hasn't matched potential. Just my opinion but I think in the preseason lists you have players who have already produced Giesler, Smith, Thelen & Stauffer with players like Montgomery and Hodges with high potential but haven't put it together yet on the high school level.

Good players succeed in whatever system their coach runs. At the college level coaches can recruit players to run their system. At the high school level players need to buy into the system and make it work for them. Thelen averaged 20 ppg last season with less than stellar guard play. Giesler is a no doubt top 5 player and he played with a shoot first point guard. Stauffer was successful with very average guard play. These players were very good with less than ideal circumstances.

One could argue that Boone wins the game with a different approach. No need to beat a dead horse, but he group that played for Boone last 3 years or so had been successful every year before Boone and in AAU ball, anyway.

I would argue that parents close to the program at Boone are the number 1, number 2, and number 3 problems.
