To add to this, Travis can definitely shoot the ball, but does not have the green light to shoot 3's. He just does not play in a system that allows him to showcase this talent.

This has been my argument for years with BCHS basketball. Their 'system' doesn't allow for athletes/basketball players to shine and show off their skills (like AAU does). That is why you see glimpes of really nice play and times of him disappearing, heck, there are long stretches of games when the WHOLE BOONE TEAM disappears.

 

To say Travis isn't a top 10 player in the Northen Kentucky is ridiculous!!! He's top 5, easy!!! I would throw in Trevan Brown as top 10 (or close to it). The problem is, THE BOONE SYSTEM!!!!

So you are saying that Hatton can defend Rico or you are saying he can beat Ricardo off the dribble as an 8th grader? I'd like to know as i missed that matchup.

 

Im not saying that they have to play one-one but i wouldnt rank him above those two. i was also suspect of Stewart's ability to take over a game but i saw clearly that he can do that this summer.

 

No. Not at all. I'm saying that as an 8th grader he matched up against one of the best players int the 9th in quite a while and did OK. He wasn't overmatched. He wasn't intimidated.

 

You have an advantage in regards to Stewart because of seeing him this summer. I didn't, thus, my vote.

They have 3 that deserve consideration - without question.

 

In fairness to Montgomery he's played with some good players who have seemed to be more of a focus offensively. He's now THE MAN so he needs to play like it. He seems to have all of the physical attributes you're looking for so we'll see if that translates into more production.

We'll see if the 'system' allows for him to be THE MAN. If he's allowed to play, he'll be the man, however, if he's not, Boone will continue to run the motion offense and score 50 points a game. Travis will get his 10 - 12 ppg, 5-6 rebounds per game, 2 - 3 assists per game. Just like last year.

In 09/10:

 

Boone scored 55 points in 23 of 28 games

Holmes scored 55 in 19 of 31

NCC scored 55 in 17 of 27

CCH scored 55 in 11 of 31

Dixie scored 55 in 17 of 28.

 

Looks like Boone was up there in points scored.

Hatton's defense while still a little green as a 7th grader, was much improved last year imo. I think what some may interpret as average defense was more about staying on the floor and not becoming a spectator in foul trouble. Let's face it, while Dixie had some good athletes on the floor, they relied heavily on Hatton for scoring. There's a fine line between tough defense and sitting on the bench. jmo.

System allowed Boone to come within a missed layup of upsetting eventual state champion Holmes and making a trip to Rupp a couple of years ago. Has allowed Boone to win a lot of games over past couple of years.

 

Travis is a top 10 player in Northern Kentucky but I would have a hard time saying he is top 5 based on production at this time. A also wouldn't have Tyler Hodges ranked 2nd for the very same reason. Production hasn't matched potential. Just my opinion but I think in the preseason lists you have players who have already produced Giesler, Smith, Thelen & Stauffer with players like Montgomery and Hodges with high potential but haven't put it together yet on the high school level.

 

Good players succeed in whatever system their coach runs. At the college level coaches can recruit players to run their system. At the high school level players need to buy into the system and make it work for them. Thelen averaged 20 ppg last season with less than stellar guard play. Giesler is a no doubt top 5 player and he played with a shoot first point guard. Stauffer was successful with very average guard play. These players were very good with less than ideal circumstances.

Here, we are discussing the top 10 players in NKY, which you feel Travis Montgomery clearly doesn't belong on the list.

 

I would replace Montgomery with Hatton on this list. Very surprised Hatton is omitted here.

 

If dunking in warm ups before the refs come out makes him an athlete, then we agree. I have watched closely for two years now and I am underwhelmed. Disappears for long stretches and is not a very good shooter. Hatton is unstoppable getting to the rim.

I agree also. If anyone had the opportunity to see Travis this summer they would know there is so much more to his game than the ability to dunk on everyone. Which he may do alot this year. He should come into his own this season. He will be very fun to watch.

Travis will be in the top three this year if not the top 9th Region player. He averaged a double double all but three games this past year for Boone. He was in double figures for 2 out of 3 stats almost every game, scoring, rebounding and/or assists. He's an all around player that can give all aspects of all game including his exciting dunks!

I really don't know what the issue is you have with Travis (spurrned AAU coach, etc.), however, to say he is NOT a top 10 player in NKY this year is rediculous.

I am only looking at ONE thing when it comes to player skill evaluation. We just happen to disagree on the talent level, and the players who we think belong on the list. I disagree with this statement (and that ok, that's why this board exists. lol). I believe (and it's only my opinoin) that the Boone system is not condussive to his (and others) style of play. Whereas, with his AAU team, a more up and down the court and a more spreadout system (fewer number of set plays, walking the ball up the court, etc.), he shined more than in high school.

 

It really comes down to debating who is on the list, who is not and who should be on the list. You are saying out of the top 10 players, he is the only one that doesn't deserve to be on the list. I'm saying not only should he be, but also Trevan Brown should be as well (or should be close). I know I'm a Boone homer.

 

I take it personally only because it gets frustrating seeing the Boone players (Montgomery, Brown, Cotton, Popp, Gabbard, etc.), year after year, not being able to utilize their talents to the fullest on the basketball court. That's all.
