St. X 33 Manual 18

Wow, I never heard that. What was the context?

The only thing I can think of is when Curley went down for a minute... but that was a clean play.

Curley unloads the ball to avoid the sack from Austin McKinney, who makes contact just after Curley's release. It was a clean play, and McKinney wasn't headhunting or anything like that. Just the sort of play that QB's get a little banged up on. It was the only injury stoppage of the game, and Curley was right back in the next series (the play happened on 3rd and long, so Curley didn't miss a snap.)

Both teams had a hit out of bounds or two. All in all, it was a pretty clean game, just a few mental errors for both teams (I think X was flagged for PI a couple of times, and Manual had a handful of encroachments and illegal shifts.) Plus the unsportsmanlike calls after a few of the TDs, 1 on X and 2 on Manual.

But Coach Glaser mentioned it after the game was over and on the radio post-game? Doesn't sound like a heat of the moment thing on his part, sounds like he was making an effort to make a statement.

That was the play, with no flag by the way. As the game went to half time Glaser tells the sideline reporter that Manual hit them a "cheapshot", but that was what he expects from "this group".

It was at the half.

I find it interesting that Nichols is being criticized for not winning the Big games. Yes he hasn't regularly beaten Male, is 1-2 vs Trinity and has yet to beat St X but he has made all of those contests "THE" game that night in Jefferson County. It wasn't long ago that once mighty Manual had been reduced to an easy win for St. X and Male. With the exception of the 88 season and the Travis prentice years they didn't play those teams close very often.

Nichols has elevated the program back to a level where they can compete with any team in the state but that is overlooked because we haven't beaten the "Big-3" often enough.

Nichols is still a young coach (33) and is being compared to 2 future Hall of Fame level coaches in Redmon and Glaser, and a top notch program with unlimited resources in Trinity ( not to discount Beatty, but he hasn't been in KY long eough to be a Hall of Famer, yet anyway).

One thing is Nichols (no offense, coach!) seems older than he is if you don't know him personally. I bet there will be some on BGP that would be surprised to find out he's so young.

Another thing is that other programs are trying to force their mold onto Manual. You don't see a lot of fans from small programs speak diminishingly of Nichols' accomplishments at Manual. I think that's because fans of the Big 3 don't know what it's like to try and compete with them. It's an uphill battle. I don't want to turn this post into yet another argument about numbers, or feeder schools, or about how 'gosh darn it we work harder than everybody else, that's why we're nearly invincible.' Let's just leave it at it being so hard to be Male, Trinity, and St. X, that the only team outside their club to have beaten two of them in the past five years is Manual. So while he might not seem to be up to the challenge from inside the tower, those of us outside the gate think he's looking pretty darn good.

LexCath beat Male in 01' and St.X in 03'.

LexCath beat Male in 01' and St.X in 03'.

I stand corrected, you're absolutely right. For some reason, I had the LexCath/Male game in a different year in my head.

It's still an accomplishment.

Nichols often acts younger than he is. Some see this as an advantage. Others see this as his downfall. Too me, there is a lack of discipline in the program. I'd say it stems from a young coach.

BUT!!!! His kids love him and play VERY hard for him. You can’t knock that at all.

Bravo Pete. I think a lot of people take it for granted that Coach Nichols took over a program that had just recently been resurected by Jerry Mayes. While Mayes was there there was never a win let alone a close game to X or Male. At least now the games are competitive. That isn't a knock on Mayes, it is just part of the process in getting a school community to change their mindset about having a winning football program. Glaser, Redman and BEatty all came into programs with a winning tradition and that makes coaching and getting student/athletes a little easier. That Manual job is not an easy spot. Go into that school and I bet you wouldn't fine 100 kids not associated with the football team that could tell you what the football team's reacord was. Better yet, I bet you couldn't fine 30 teachers not associated with the football team that could answer the same question. Now ask how many National Merit Semi-finalist there are and most everyone could tell you. Am I saying that there is anything wrong with high academics? Absolutely not. However, I think there should be an equal emphasis on both areas. At Manual I don't think that is the case. That makes for a tough situation for ANY coach.

Joe has done a good job rebuilding the sleeping giant. Joe has played Trinity close because he is the first coach to play them regularly. I played against the Manual team that went to the state finals in 89. That was a while ago but Manual has been competitive for almost 10 years now. Manual should be in the big 4 with their location, tradition, stadium and academic legacy but they remain on the outside looking in.

I agree that there should be a big 4 due to all those reasons. However after that 88 season there was a big drop in the competitiveness of the teams that were fielded. Even after Mayes got there in 94 it took 3 years before they had a winning season. Mayes was there another 3 or 4 years after those winning season started. Nichols took over after that so in all actuallity Manual has only been COMPETITIVE with the Big 3 for the past 3 years. They have been competitive with the rest of Jefferson County for about 8 years. How many other teams in Jefferson COunty have been competitive with those teams in the Big 3 for the past 4 years? There aren't many if any.

There aren't as many that play all 3 either. Manual is a solid program but will never join the Big 3 at the top as long as Joe is the coach. Just my opinion. PRP will get there first.

Coach Wolfe needs to get used to coaching at a bigger school, first...
